Show assessment WORK MUST BE DONE IN 1931 AS USUAL A washington dispatch of the says there will be no legislation by congress this session relieving the owners of mining claims from doing assessment work on their claims either for this year or next the senate committee on mining after discussing the smoot bill which would waive requa ement has decided to sidetrack the bill and the house committee which had before it a similar bill by representative douglas of arizona has been importuner importuned to take no action in fact representative douglas lias repudiated his own bill and has joined in asking that the bill not be reported since these bills made their appearance there has sprung up in all of the mining states of the west protests from miners and prospectors who have been making a living in recent years by doing assessment work for others who have not been in a position to do their own work and there has developed a widespread fear that passage of these bills would be followed by similar legislation applicable to 1931 those who live by this means maintain that the bill in question would rob them of their means of livelihood and their protest has been generally heeded by the members of the respective mining committees furthermore the interior department Is on record as opposing the legislation and that Is another factor which insures donac nonac alon by congress |
