Show EARLY INDIAN after two months spent tn a survey of the prehistoric indian remains in the paradox valley in southwestern colorado the state historical society party under dr george woodbury curator of archaeology haar returned to denver maps and charts made in the valley show many prehistoric indian settlements in th west end of the valley the habitation sites wera without exception located on low knolls dr woodbury said and were near water the buildings were constructed of dressed stone masonry they and in every case collapsed and none of the walls were visible on the surface A small excavation however sufficed to determine their character these indians were a sedentary people living by agriculture and hunting they were not nomadic aseere as were the plains indians evidently they led life very similar to that of the present pueblo indians there are many caves in th sa sandstone formations in section but any evidences of prehistoric occupation were long ago wiped the weathering of the stone and alternations in the caves due to rains and frost this summers work is a part of a general scheme formulated by the state historical society some years ago intended to place a definite limit on the areas occupied by prehistoric aborigines in colorado the work was begun several years ago by L A jeancon then curator of archaeology archeology arche for the society and the expense lias been partly borne by the institute on the san maguel river the party found evidences of modem ute occupation and one small of prehistoric origin probably of ute origin were also found in many places the paradox valley received its name from the fact that water apparently patently ly runs the wrong way there the dolores river flows across the valley instead of down it and tributary streams in many cases follow the samar course for part of their length the eastern end of the vaclev Is all desert but the western half Is fertile and it is there without exception that the indian remains are found it Is in the western end that the present dwellers in the valley live dr woodbury found the cattlemen there of great help their directions he said were correct and comprehensive in every instance |
