Show PRESENT considered UNSAFE TWO GREEN RIVER SPANS MAY ALSO BE REPLACED replacing of three of the major highway bridges in utah the one across the colorado at moab and those across the green river at oreen river city and at jensen Is being studied by engineers for the state road commission the studies contemplate also line changes the surveys come under the supervision of K C wright assistant engineer in charge of construction st and maurice housecroft in charge of bridges and structures associated with the proposed change across the colorado will be changes in the roadway entering moab various possible sites for the bridge are under consideration both between the present bridge and the lower courthouse wash bridge and farther down the river the latter would eliminate the courthouse bridge as well the present colorado river structure Is made up of three foot spans A sign prohibits a load of more than 10 tons on this bridge although recently it Is stated a total load of 30 tons was placed on one span A possible line change at moab would skirt the foot of the hills behind the cultivated area and then curve into he main street of the city eliminating several sharp curves similarly leaving the city toward the south eliminating of other sharp turns Is being considered the present highway bridge at has three foot spans with trestle approaches making the total length feet several new sites farther up the river are being considered eliminating several right angle turns in the city further studies are being made east of elgan which Is across the river from green river city and connecting that city with the present constructed section of the federal highway between solitude and ploy the bridge at jensen is also of three main spans each feet long and an approach of 57 feet all three bridges to be replaced were constructed about 20 years ago and were calculated for maximum loads of 10 tons the state law now permits or will after january 1 next loads of 17 tons on three axles or nine tons on one axle since after 10 years of service the calculated 10 ton maximum may be figured as reduced at least 20 per cent the present structures may be said to be capable of carrying safely loads of eight tons all three bridges are on transcontinental highway routes and it is felt that for many reasons they should be brought up to the standards in load capacity which users of such highways are entitled to and do expect when the states road finances permit of the changes being made |
