Show FEDERAL CONTROL OF RANGE ADVOCATED william peterson director of the extension division of the utah state agricultural college has just returned from a mile survey tour of utah nevada arizona new mexico califar nia wyoming and colorado where he conducted a party comprised of president hoovers domain commission the purpose of the gnp was to study j the character of the lands classed as belonging to the public domain and to determine what is to be the future I 1 policy in to their conservation and administration director peterson said upon his return that he is thoroughly convinced that the public domain should be under control of the federal government and that the establishment of water holes on the ranges Is one of the most needed aids at the present time when director peterson meets with the public domain commission in washington D november 10 he will stand firm in his appeal for government control in his report the most pronounced example of overgrazing over grazing on the entire trip was found in new mexico said director peterson here the effects of erosion due to overgrazing over grazing plead for supervised management of the ranges the party visited zions national canyon in utah the bryce park and desert area and boulder dam site the the gold fields of nevada owens valley where lies in the mahaba desert continued on last page FEDERAL CONTROL OF RANGE ADVOCATED continued from first page most of the public domain in callior I 1 nia the imperial valley where a new type of land will be brought under cultivation through the development of the proposed all american canal yuma phoenix salt river valley grand canyon and flagstaff in anzona in new mexico the party visited the elephant butte dam and the farming under the project here they found that the vegetation has mostly been removed by overgrazing over grazing and with each rain storm the water moves rapidly jn a great number of wide arroyos which come from the west an investigation of the range experimental work on the camado experimental tract showed that rehabilitation of this type of range 1 entirely feasible other areas were visited in new mexico to study the range conditions the famous carlsbad baem was also visited this is a national monument that should receive more prominence director peterson said other sections visited included denver cheyenne wheatland and casper at casper a study was made of the underground relationship of the public lands as they are affected b the development of oil and especially the relation ot the oil development to reclamation la the tea pot dome area was also studied as well as the red desert noted winter grazing area of wyoming many contacts were made by people who were using the public range and several meetings were held with land boards and state officials we are all agreed that while the time has been strenuous the effort has been entirely worth to give the members a better concept of the problems in other states said director peterson |
