Show commencement EXERCISES ABE HELD NINE BOYS AND TWO GIRLS AWARDED DIPLOMAS A graduating class somewhat smaller than usual but unique in the act that the number of boys far exceeded the representatives of the fair sex received diplomas last evening at the annual commencement exercises of the grand county high school the class of 1930 thirteen in number consisted of nine boys and two girls the graduating exercises were held at the high school auditorium which was tilled to near capacity by the relatives and friends of the graduates the class colors pink and white were tarried out in the decorations which consisted of japanese cherry blossoms the class flower at 8 25 the graduates marched to the rostrum accompanied by the speakers of the evening the invocation was delivered by the rev william E parks pastor of the first baptist church in the heart of the hills was by the high school girls chorus clay aured was the first speaker of the evening and delivered the salutatory address he was followed by an address by the class president harper rutledge A duet tulips was rendered by misses helen bush and madge andrew mcconkie gave the valedictory address all three speakers gave carefully prepared and well rendered talks which were carefully followed and appreciated by the audience the commencement song was rendered by a mixed chorus principal 0 L alkoff in a brief address introduced the class to superintendent D S L mccorkle and recommended that the members be given proper reward for having completed four years of high school work he praised the I 1 graduates individually and collectively for their earnest work superintendent mccorkle complimented the students for having finished their labors in high school and declared he was convinced the young men and women of the class would give a good account of themselves in the battle of life which was now commencing for them preliminary to presenting diplomas to the graduates C A robertson president of the board of education gave a short address in which he eulogized the members of the teaching profession for the great work they are doing for society and humanity in general the greatest characters of all ages he said have been teachers the moab and grand county schools he said are now and for many years have been fortunate in having good teachers and the splendid work these teachers have done is attested by the success grand county graduates almost without exception are attaining in this and other states following the exercises the annual graduation ball was held at the star hall A large crowd attended and a very enjoyable evening spent baccalaureate services sunday evening at the auditorium the baccalaureate services in honor of the graduating class were held ai vocal sextet whispering hope was the opening number being rendered by misses helen bush ruth hawks dolores Win boum bertha woodruff madge and ruby oliver followed by the invocation by the rev william E parks bishop W D hammond gave the baccalaureate address service was the theme of his remarks and he showed that the desire to serve to help mankind was the motive that had actuated every great character of history bishop hammond s address carefully prepared and well rendered was one of inspiration to the graduates as well as the audience A vocal solo was rendered by mrs ida pletcher stewart followed by the benediction by the rev parks following are the members of the graduating class of 1930 curels robertson clay aured jesse walker andrew mcconkie jack pletcher carl aured harper rutledge john holman kenneth beach desmond young audrey ray day and gene brewart |
