Show observations ON FOREST professor Tro fessor george D clyde TI engineer of the utah agricultural college experiment station and R W pu p U ey professor of geology and chaar rin of the committee on high school alons tl ons to colleges paid moab a visit monday and wednesday en route to md from monticello lofessor ofes sor clydes visit was for the of establishing a snow survey course on the la sal forest to replace he now stake observation readings which formerly have been made by forest officers these gentlemen were to monticello by super sor folster and ranger smith and were there joined by bangers hunt and christensen A snow survey course was laid out at ha mouth of noth no th creek at an elevation of feet the core was 2000 dept ion and content readings were taken at definite intervals of feet A similar course will be laid out on bald mesa next spring by local forest officers for several years the forest service has ben making snow sluice readings during the winter on various watersheds on national forests ln utah and this information to the weather bureau at salt take t ake city A few of the snow stakes originally established have been abandoned by the forest service but a great many of them iw been kept up and the records obtained at monthly intervals throughout the winter the records 0 o date are of great value and have justified the efforts to get them howver snow stake readings have certain serious shortcomings short comings in that they furnish no information on water content of the snow which after all is the record most desired they often cannot be located so as to give a representative snow cover condition and when taken at monthly intervals involve a lot of hard hazardous travel at the same time there Is a growing interest in and need for more accurate information on winter precipitation on the higher water sheds as a basis for better knowledge of the water supply view of this situation plans have been made for a cooperative arrangement between the weather bureau utah state agricultural college water sers forest service and the great basin experiment station to replace the snow stake observations with established snow surveys these snow survey measurements will be taken daring the latter part of march early in april each year except at a few key stations where measurements will be made several times during the winter professor baileys visit was for the purpose of creating interest for bleher education he gave talks before stu dent bodies of the high schools aej blanding and moab |
