Show TURKEYS AT MOAB NOV 8 moab and la sal sai turkeys for thanksgiving market which will sold through the utah poul poultry try producers co operative cooperative association be received received at moab on nov 8 and 9 according to advices advises received week by the moab poultry association the letter of instructions to poultry growers giving advice as to the killing ming and dressing of birds Is printed below and all growers are instructed to read it carefully as it will save them money the letter follows selecting birds for slaughtering growers should go through their hocks flocks carefully and select only finished birds forthe forthe thanksgiving market if they have a liberal covering of white or yellow fat on the breast under the wings and on the back and if it they have shed most of their pin feathers they are ready to kill no matter how much your birds weigh it if you find they are killing out blue and have many pin feathers hold them for later markets if your birds are otherwise ready the toms should weigh at least fourteen pounds and the hens at least ten pounds live weight in order to meet the market requirements on dressed turkeys which are twelve pounds on toms and eight pounds on hens J I 1 killing shut the birds off feed eighteen to twenty four hours before killing give them MRS mash h but no whole grain to r the last feeding it Is important that they have water thirty minutes before they are killed in fact water should be available for the birds in the peris pens all day you should have blood cups with weight enough to hold the bird birds a head down so the blood will flow more freely and will not be thrown on other dressed birds make sure you have properly severed the wood blood veins in the back 0 of f the throat and tant the blood Is flowing freely before piercing the brain poorly bled turkeys are always graded as number twos dressing remove all feathers excepting a single row of the small striped feath ers on the last joint of the wing take the feathers oft off close to the head pinny poorly dressed birds or birds with dirty feet will not be permitted in the number one grades wash their feet in cold water and wipe the blood from their mouths also squeeze their butts and make sure there is not any dirt or filth on any part of the carcass it if skin tears are sewed up while the birds are warm they will not show up badly and can often be saved from going into lower grades crops crop with teed feed in should be removed before bringing the birds to the receiving station to remove a crop make a neat incision on the back of the neck near the wing when the crop has been removed sew up the incision cooling turkeys must be pre cooled eighteen to twenty four hours before delivering to the receiving station birds killed the same day they are delivered to a receiving station will not be accepted they should be hung up separately and in a place well ventilated and where they will not be exposed to the sun blin hauling to the receiving station W wrap p the turkeys heads with paper before loading them for delivering so they will not smear the other birds with which they are packed pack the birds close together so they will not get rubbed or bruised while on the way to the receiving afa station tion all turkeys should be delivered before noon on the following dates to allow tune time for packing before night deliver your turkeys to the receiving station nearest to you on the dates designated below monticello Monti celIo nov 6 moab garage at monticello 0 moab nov 8 and 9 moab garage at moab thompsons Thomp sons nov 10 please k keep beep in mind that the turkeys must be delivered before noon all the receiving stations will open at 8 aa a in deliver early and avoid delays yours very truly utah poultry producers coop co op association |
