Show importance OF AUDITS SHOWN BY EXPOSURES the march issue of the utah tax payer the official organ of the utah taxpayers association Is devoted exclusively clu to a consideration of audits it cites the law which calls for the auditing of all accounts in smaller cities in cities counties and school districts every two years and in catle ot the first class every year it requires that the auditors shall be competent accountants the issue proceeds to elaborate upon the conditions obtaining in this state end tabulates the records of cities counties and school districts respecting the frequency of audits it shows that a large number of cities are flouting the law and have not had their accounts audited since 1923 the counties of carbon kane san juan san pete and wasatch were also derelict in this respect even three school districts have not complied with the I 1 law no doubt the recent disclosures of wholesale looting of the public treasury has aroused the citizens to a keener appreciation of the importance of this law the taxpayer proceeds to shatter the contention that any unit in this state cannot afford an audit and states that in some instances bookkeepers are hired instead of public accountants to do this technical work so many disclosures have been made that show the manner in which public funds can be diverted without detection that this issue of the taxpayer is probably one of the most forceful ever put out on this particular question representatives of the taxpayers association are now meeting with taxpayers in their respective units making an analysis ot the last audits of the units and pointing out ways in which the local administration i being conducted this should prove a very effective follow up to the discussion of audits and bring about aroused public consciousness on th needs and requirements of audits by competent public accountants in this same issue the legislature Is applauded for its sane efforts in the realm of taxation reference is made to the special tax commission that is set up to make a comprehensive study of taxing system the taxpayers association pledges unlimited support to that body in giving the commission such information as has already been gathered by th taxpayers they set forth the hope that the governor will appoint a commission worthy of the name J A elmer was an arrival last night from eos angeles calif he ex lecta to couple of months here on mining business |
