Show LA SAL FOREST NOTES ranger examination an open competitive examination for forest ranger was held in the forest office on october 30 two applicants participated namely clerk L R chandler of the local forest office and john W palmer of monticello prior to the examination supervisor polster received notice from the civil service commission that there would be four competitors evidently the other two got cold feet since they failed to appear fire season past AU anxiety and piorry on the part of forest officers relative to the fire situation was put to an end when the la sal forest was visited by a wonderful storm during the middle of october and now again at the time of this writing considerable snow fell at the higher elevations after passing through one of the driest seasons during the summer and early fall that this section has experienced tor several years we are indeed grateful to the weather man for his visit to southeastern utah during the former storm inches of precipitation fell which saturated the ground to a depth of 18 inches fall plowing Is progressing nicely and livestock on the winter ranges are faring considerably better than formerly anticipated at the time they left the forest baker R S north creek road work on the baker R S north creek road which extends from monticello to north creek a distance of approximately six miles has been suspended for the winter this was a cooperative project in which san juan county and the citizens of monticello cooperated with the forest service on a 50 50 basis this is classified as a forest development road but it will serve other purposes namely recreation the latter use will necessitate improved camp grounds and sanitation facilities being provided on the grassy parks at the mouth of north creek and vicinity ranger smith and clerk chandler were each successful in bagging a tour point buck hunting on the forest and adjacent thereto was reported good during the latter part of the open season several does have been reported killed but the culprits are still however violations of this kind cannot go on continually without the offender being apprehended some time A word to the wise Is sufficient the guilty needs no accusers administrative improvement during the tore part of october supervisor folster assisted ranger smith in reconstructing five miles of pole telephone line from la sal store to deer creek new poles and new cedar stubs were used exclusively folster also spent approximately two weeks during october assisting ranger van winkle at monticello reconstruct three miles of tree telephone line and post five miles of forest boundary to required forest service standards lambs delivered owing to the extremely dry season from which we have recently emerged the weight of lambs was somewhat reduced as compared with last years weights however in spite of this and apparently because of good moisture storage in the ground last spring a forage crop of fair volume and of high nutritive properties was produced over most of the la sal forest and the lambs made fairly good gains as indicated by the following weights which present may lambs allred co 80 pounds boyd hammond i pounds james somerville 77 bounds A M robertson 73 pounds hammond brothers ewt pounds don taylor 68 pounds tom taylor 67 pounds indian creek cattle co 67 pounds in the three latter cases the sheep were practically all ranged on private holdings don taylor who attended the funeral of his nephew cecil C taylor at last week returned sunday |
