december 8 when the moab gusher came in according to eli F taylor register 0 the salt lake land office millions of acres have been covered by these filings and many of those who have been granted oil prospecting permits are residents of eastern cities one group of new york men filed on several sections while many chicago men have applied for permits governor george H dern of utah is one of those affected by kilitis oi litis he made a filing last week on lands on the structure southwest of the moab well in kane county the western allies oil and gas company which drilled the first well in moab valley and is a pioneer oil company of utah closed a deal this week whereby it acquired drilling contracts on a considerable acreage of land west of moab on what is known as the ten mile structure five permits were taken over by the company under a contract which provides that a well will be drilled this spring the land is located about ten miles southeast of Mo the permit tees who leased to the allies company are don taylor H C goodman jr J 0 wilcox mrs clara savage and R J thomson several other moab people are also interested in the permits the ten mile structure is considered very promising wildcat territory and production is looked for in he tensile tenmile Ten mile sand D bergera president and A F giovonnini oni secretary of the western allies company were in moab the first of the week to execute the the current edition of the oil and gas journal the recognized authority in the oil industry contains an extended article written by john C howard president of the utah oil refining company who discusses the importance of the moab strike air howard states that by spring a great many wells should be drilling and he expresses the belief that thousands of holes will be put down within the next few years in giving credit for the discovery at moab mr howard states that the big six well at moab and the crescent eagle well near thompsons Thomp sons made vital contributions to the success of the undertaking by throwing light upon the lower horizons beneath the colorado river efforts will be made to expedite the survey of the public domain in prospective oil sections of utah according to advises advices received by governor dem from senator sn oot in response to a request made by the governor to determine of any steps can be taken in the matter the need for surveys has been brought to the front of late by the bringing in of the moab gusher and the fact that state titles do not attach to the school land grants until the land has been surveyed if the ands should about 2000 feet the drill is in the la plata group af pf the jurassic with about 2500 feet to go to reach the pennsylvanian sand which is productive in midwest utah southern well below moab several sands should be cut before that depth is reached however D bergera well known businessman of helper and A F giovonnini oni of price accompanied by G C croce a capitalist of san francisco and new york acio visitors in moab monday and tuesday on oil business all are stockholders of the western allies oil gas company mr croce went on to new york city tuesday while bergera and giovonnini oni returned to carbon county yesterday C C double a well known oil well driller who has had a great deal of experience in the new mexican and mid continent fields and F C haller of mancos are in moab this week although they have not announced their plans it is understood that they contemplate putting down a test on the north anticline of moab valley has heretofore been untouched by the dall it is understood that they hive secured a number of leases on patented and government land w the texas production company which recently leased from M P smith and H L rath the lands comprising the bed of the colorado nver and extending through the big six shafer lockhart Lock bart and indian creek domes plans to commence actual operations at an early date an offset well to the midwest utah southern gusher will be drilled first this well will be located i in the river a short distance from the midwest well the drill ng will either be erected on a platform set on piling or a coffer dam will be in stalled D H hamson in charge of lands for the texas company and P F lowne geologist arrived in moab monday and will spend some time here they will go down the nver this week and will probably select a location for the first well the texts company has ordered a motor boat for the use of their employees which should arrive in a few days rumors are current that the mid west utah southern interests will resist any attempt of the texas production to drill the river bed and will seek an injunction preventing the studding spud ding in of the texas well the original government permits taken over by the midwest and af ciliated filia ted companies include the land under the river the state also claims the land and leased it to smith and rath who gave the texas company drilling contracts j the midwest exploration company announces that within the next few months it will spud in a well on the elk adge structure about thirty miles west of this structure which covers an area of about acres is said to be one of the largest in the country A corps of midwest geologists and engineers made a thorough test of the structure last summer and have reported favorable on it if the structure proves productive one of the greatest fields of the world will doubtless be opened up although the state land board his issued a number of oil leases on stagg lands in the moab region the leases contain the provision that the royalty to be paid the state may be increased in the event oil is found the state officials are scrutinizing the regulations of the secretary of the interior covering oil permits and will soon issue regulations covering oil and gas leases on state land the leases already issued carry an annual rental of 50 cents an acre a gross royalty of one eighth on all oil and gas produced and limiting the acreage leased to any one person or company to acre these regulations may be revised later among those who have recently been granted state land leases in the moab section are V R wallace angeles calif has located in moab mr walsh is a ng building contractor and incidentally ci dos all kinds of construction work connected with oil field dev elopement elop ment his announcement appears elsewhere in this issue C M wagner representing the general petroleum company one of the large operating and refining concerns was a visitor in moab the last of the week he was accompanied by R B morgan and S D fyfe of the general petroleum P W gilldon a member of the tax commission of the state of nevada win has spent the past two acks at doab left monday on a business trip to salt lake city mr gilbon is contemplating entering the acl estate business at moab and 1 l return this week willam R wallace jr of salt like city was an arrival sunday mr wallace and his father hae extensive oil land holdings in this vicinity and he is here to attend to the preliminary work incident to the development of the land charles F lupton of denver one of the leading geologists of the country was m moab the last of the week mr lupton made an examination of moab valley and it is understood der stood that he reported favorably on its possibilities for oil production mr lupton was formerly connected with the united states geological and in that capacity made n survey of the desert country west of moab about sixteen years ago when there was considerable wild cat drilling in that region |
