Show PAPER GETS GOODS ON BILL RISHEL the sei n complaints have been received from green river thompsons Thomp sons cisco and other points along the pikes peak ocean to ocean highway of the activities tivi ties of W D rishel manager of the utah automobile association m turning traffic away from the pikes peak route it is reported that travel over the highway has fallen off to a considerable extent and this is attributed to the work of rishel two weeks ago mr rishel passed through moab and the times inde pendent editor had an extended talk with hari we asked him frankly whether or not he was fighting the pikes peak road and if it were true that he was swinging traffic over the victory and lincoln highways he stated emphatically that he was not interested in any highway that he had no desire or inclination to route tourists over any particular highway that he was just as much a booster for the pikes peak road as either of the others and that all this talk about his fighting the pikes i peak was pure buncombe he stated that the road was equally as good as the victory highway and that it had been greatly improved in recent years ig in view of mr Ris hels statement we were somewhat surprised to read the article in last weeks richfield reaper which we are publishing below knowing the veracity of editor markus of the reaper we cannot doubt that he has the goods on bill rishel this time and we are inclined to believe that bill was talking for local consumption only when he was at moab the reaper article follows another one of the tricks of our friend bill rishel who is always scheming to deprive our part of the country of its just share of tourist traffic came to light when W M wood secretary of the chamber of commerce of grand junction colorado addressed ia letter to dr A J lewis of salina in which he asks for the best possible information regarding the salina canyon route mr wood also asks that some such in formation be forwarded to E E I 1 jackson secretary of the automobile club of colorado springs so as to counteract Ris hels efort to keep people from using the pikes peak ocean to ocean highway rishel had written to mr jackson 1 enclosing you a as follows I am clipping from the deseret news of this city showing the condition in the salina canyon this is a main link in the so called pikes peak ocean to ocean highway which some people including yourself are trying to force upon the state of utah and the country at large as a good transcontinental highway of course the state highway commission of utah does not recognize it as such neither does the federal government which has refused to place it on the federal aid system also neither is it imen tinned in the new numbering system I 1 for interstate highways this letter is fully in accord of mr Ris hels insidious efforts to dis sem minate as much false information about our roads as possible to have vengeance for the rebuke he received in richfield and sevier county four years ago when on account of his activities he was flatly refused here any further support for the utah automobile association for which ho had collected the year previous 1600 under the pretense to do something for this part of the country which he never did the article in the deseret news to which bill refers was a piece of news which he himself had communicated to the salt lake papers stating that the salina canyon road 13 closed the deseret news loyally corrected that false after having been informed that the statement was wrong from A to Z but mr rishel did not inform the automobile association of colorado springs that his information had been wrong the salt lake papers seem to have finally discovered that rishel is using them for his own sinister purposes the deseret news in a recent article which was reproduced in the reaper of last week gave correct information and the salt lake tribune delegated one of its best 0 J games to richfield and surrounding country to find out what is what |
