Show OIL MAN HAS CLOSE CALL WHEN PLANE geo T hansen of utah southern and D E doty pilot have exciting experience on flight to moab A narrow escape from serious injury or death wag experienced saturday afternoon by george T hansen president of the utah southern oil company and D E doty aviator when the airplane in which they were making a tap from salt lake to moab developed a clogged gas line about five ariles west of town in moab canyon where they made a forced landing the plane was badly damaged and the two men sustained a severe shaking up had the gas line trouble developed a minute sooner the pilot would have been compelled to make a landing in the rough broken region jn upper moab canyon with destruction to the plane and almost certain death to the occupants the gasoline supply stopped just as the plane neared the bottom of the canyon and after passing over the roughest terrain with considerable maneuvering the pilot was able to get the plane over the amt which cuts through the canyon at the dugway and in looking over the surrounding country in search of a landing place he noted that the bottom of the dry wash near the mouth of the canyon appeared to be comparatively ively level ha descended immediately and as the machine struck the ground the landing gear came in contract with a rock breaking the gear off and toppling the plane over on its nose one of the propeller blades was broken off the frame of the plane was broken and the landing gar wrecked the men though badly shaken up were able to crawl the wrecked piano advance word had been received in moab that mr hansen was coming to moab in an airplane and when a phone call was received from green river that the plane had passed over that place many local people motored to the meadows in the lower part of the valley to witness the arrival of the ship in the party was mr hansens brother D G hansen they saw the plane as it came over the cliffs west of town and saw it suddenly glide out of to the bottom of the canyon the spectators supposed that the plane had in the rocks and the party rushed to the mouth of the canyon expecting to fand both men killed it was with relief that they met hinsen and doty who had started to walk to town i mr hansen and pilot left salt lal e saturday at noon rii aking the tap without trouble until they got to fio at 2 10 when their engine commenced to hat they made a successful landing at floy and obtained some water they followed the road from there to aboab flying low when the gis line became clogged the plane was at an elation of only about feet and it required considerable skill on the part of the pilot to keep the wings from crashing into the cliffs on either side of the narrow canyon mr hansen although painfully bruised was able to make the boat trip down the ner sunday where he inspected the two camps of the midwest utah southern companies it vas his first visit here since the well no 1 came in as a gusher he returned to moab monday aviator doty left for salt lake by train sunday to secure repairs for his plane he will return to moab in a few das to alace his ship in readiness to again tal 0 he air he expects to make vie tap down the river to well no 1 where he hopes to make a landing on top of a limestone ridge a short dis tance from the camp fl |
