Show HIGH FAITH IN THE futie FIELD salt lake tribune 1 I he moab gusher came in like a normal oil well the petroleum from it is of the dmd obtained from big producing fields and therefore we have good reason to believe a large oil field underlies southeastern utah said john C howard president of the utah oil refining corn pany in addressing the membership luncheon of the chamber of commerce yesterday I 1 so far we have found only ideal i structural conditions he continued while in addition the petroleum be ing obtained is neither sluggish nor olive oil colored both of which conditions indicate abnormalities of structure and lack of quantity freak oils are never found in large quantities all large fields are of a normal nature and that is what the john L shafer no 1 seems to indicate in the moab region mr howard declared that if a big field had been discovered the benefits to the state could hardly be underestimated der estimated but he warned against becoming stampeded with the possibility of making fortunes over night in oil stocks we are still approaching pro aching the future of the big six field with fear and trembling he said because we have had so many failures in utah in the past that we cannot feel too optimistic the president of the refining company then recalled the efforts made to find oil in utah during the past five years all of which were discouragingly unsuccessful all of the drillars drillers dr illers were on the ragged edge of despondency he said utah had a black eye as far as oil development was concerned none of the large companies even would come into the state to drill and in a government report made not long ago to the president utah was not mentioned as an oil state the oil of the uintah basin were listed among the states assets but further than that utah was ignored as an oil producer the geologists who studied the big six dome region had no conception of what we believe is there and hence it was a surprise to everyone when the john L shafer blew in that tuesday morning three weeks tr ago mr howard said that when the big six dome was tested out it was hoped that a reservoir of porous lime or sand would be found wh ch would almost assure a large supply this test will also determine he explained where and how to sink more wells mr howard said that the laws governing the finding of oil were as fixed almost as the law of gravitation which means that oil Is found only under a set of specific conditions he averred that it would in thac coati region these conditi tons exist even if it is definitely proved that oil i does underlie this region in huge quantities the difficulties of getting it out due to the topography of the country will tax the ingenuity and patience of the companies which un to exploit it some of the benefits w ch will accrue to the if the field proves out were outlined by mr howard in such instance he said utahna might emoy one of the lowest prices on petroleum products in country as undoubtedly additional plants I 1 will be built here byther companie which will cause competition and i reduced prices mr howard said it might be two or three years before oil is brought to salt lake for refining as it would take some time to sink more wells and build pipe lines to bring atut he declared that the utah oil refining compa been desperate to find oil in utah as it is not compatible with sound business to maintain a refining plant here with the supply so far distant he pointed put that now his company is bringing in oil from under danvers Den vers very nose but doubted whether a condition I 1 ke this could long exist coming back to the assumption that utah has a great oil field mr howard painted a roseate p of the future of the state he advanced as his that salt lake would experience substantial growth under the increased business it would bring about in the meantime he warned salt lake jobbers and commercial houses should watch the moab territory there is potentially a big business there but if salt lakers are not careful denver is komg to get away with it I 1 believe a bag oil production down there will be a godsend to the denver arso grande railroad every day thirty two train loads of petroleum leave the town of casper formerly there was hardly enough traffic on these branc acs ics to pay expenses mr howard said that if the big six field brought wealth it would be very well distributed as the control of the field does not lie n the hands of a few but is divided among almost stock lease and permit holders this distribution of interests will help the people of the state aa a whole and create a healthier healt nier condition than if one man or company controlled the field |
