Show i when the money will benefit him. That is why enormous pressure pres-sure is exerted on Congress by groups of all kinds for bigger and better appropriations. And that is why Congress must have the courage to resist this pressure pres-sure if the nation is to avoid financial fin-ancial disaster. Governments, like individuals, can spend beyond be-yond their incomes and dissipate i their resources only so long. The only difference Ls that government govern-ment can stave off the day of reckoning longer. But when that day does come, the repercussions 'are felt everywhere. I The Hoover Commission, for one, lias shown us how we can heavily cut the cost of government govern-ment without undermining any necessary function. Let tnis Congress Con-gress do it and if it does, let it be given the thanks of a grateful grate-ful nation. NUMBER ONE ISSUE As the second session of this Congress got underway, news reports emphasized that the domestic do-mestic issue of the greatest concern con-cern to many Senators and Rep-lesentatives Rep-lesentatives of both parties was the cost of the Federal government, govern-ment, taxes and deficits. The news reports said further that Congressional leaders, on either side of the aisle which divides di-vides Republicans and Democrats, Demo-crats, were determined to do everything ev-erything possible to cut appropriations, appro-priations, to abstain from raising taxes, and to make the next budget bud-get show a surplus instead of a deficit at the end of the fiscal year. These are splendid aims but it must be recorded that they are usually honored more in the breach than in the observance.
