Show JOHN I 1 I 1 MEW OIES DIES john J mcclellan organist at the tabernacle and nationally famous for his musical abilities died at his home in salt lake city sunday afternoon aftem oon after an illness of a year and a half professor Mc Hc CeIlan Cellan who has gained national fame as a great musician has bas for the past quarter century been the organist at the world famed pipe organ ui the Is mormon formon tabernacle at salt lake city his playing has been heard and enjoyed by many including both members of the L D S faith and tourists passing through salt lake city IN hile it is imps sible to accurately estimate the numbers who hae haie heard him perform upon the tabernacle organ it would be safe to say the number would be more than a million besides being widely known as a musician of note professor mccellan also was actively identified in the musical life of the state and did much to advance music in utah he was conductor of the salt lake opera company from 1902 to 1910 and director of the salt lake symphony orchestra from to 1912 his work in the teaching of music was also widespread he served as professor of music at the bangham young university sity at provo from 1901 to 1911 and in 1911 founded the utah con atory of music of which he was dean and head of the piano depart ment he ile also taught some private pupils while a resident of salt lake he wis the author of a course of forty eidt piano lessons called the modern pianoforte studies professor lIans reputation and activities in lift music were not urn fim cited by the confines con iines of his own state however for he gate gae organ recitals at three world fairs and appeared with great success in concerts in move more than twenty of the largest cities of the united stales states he ile gave organ recitals at the st louis exposition in 1904 the jamestown exposition in 1907 ard the panama pacific exposition at san fancisco in 1915 and al so appeared at t the san diego exposition held in 1915 many moab people were personally I 1 acquainted with professor mcclellan he ile wa wai wat t a girlhood friend of mrs george winbourn when he resided at payson and mr C A robertson studied piano under his instruction some twenty year years ago 1 |
