| Show e IVE OIL ILLING AIM I 1 UNDER WAY IN COUNTY cepl PROMISING oil RAE IS NOW ON the first test wells mells drilled in grand county for oil ps mere put don down n in 1910 even earlier than this men ex mcd ced in the oil business who nho had examined likely looking duons ons of the county prophesied that oil and gas would be en in the underlying strata of our sedimentary forma el charles T lupton connected with the U S geological sur although little was known about oil geology at that time the possibilities of obtaining production of oil in grand sty th in one of his early publications one of the first men to spud in a hole bole for the purpose of tester oil in the county was nat levi who obtained financial aid le eastern astern parties and drilled a well at salt spring south of ion on the rio grande railroad and another well at ten mile ut the same t time ime J W queen drilled a wildcat well at klonas did a company made up largely of moab people the klon mt e 00 ga company compan which drilled a shallow well A ell which was mot ported ded to hav hai e encountered a small flow of gas lie rs ro atif in chiater later years ears with with the study of oil geology further adby L it vaa vas determined that all these early wells had been f in 1 inclines nc lines this fact may have been known by the pio wkho put down doin these wells as it was no doubt a theory in daya that oil would naturally accumulate in the low places structures not wit I 1 several years later P bt Vv western estern allies oil gas PIAT became interested in the 1 atta business and with nat it tit its head studded in a hole in bin of moab this well en d a high gravity oil at 1128 strike caused a consider able flurry for the time being however oil in commercial quantities did not materialize and the hole was carried down to a depth of 2500 feet by the big six oil company although several good showings of oil and gas bere ero encountered in this additional depth the well was abandoned as dry about the drilling operations were being carried on in moab valley the wyoming worming consolidated ith kendick lavi as manager started I 1 a hole in salt valley about nine miles south of thompsons Thomp sons th s well reached a depth of feet when it was abandoned in 1920 another campaign of drilling started the big six company studded in a hole on the west bank of the colorado river in moab valley for the purpose of testing the pennsylvanian syl fornia formation tion at about tho same time the crescent eagle oil company started a hole near cres cent to test the dakotas and lower cretaceous formations at this time the big six well is temporarily closed down at 2870 2970 feet in point of formation this is the deepest well drilled in the territory as it is quite probable that the devonian comprise the last stratum drilled in this well that it is very probable that the moab well may develop into a good producer i indicated by the large body of rich carboniferous drilled all thatis that is needed is a reser voir for this oil dil to accumulate in it is i the belief of eminent geologists that a sand will 1111 be encountered in this well within a short distance it if continued on page four COON continued from froin first page nuch such a ennd sand i is encountered it will undoubtedly y prove to be saturated the BIR big six well is a cooperative test being put down don by the big six company with the embar oil od com corn many and the western allies oil gas company being equally interested in the results arrangements are now being completed to resume drilling on tho the big 4 six atell ell and operations opera tims will be started within the next few beks ileks tha tho crescent fagle after experiencing all the grief known in the game hai has attained att alneil a depth of about feel this is the deepest test so far drilled in the state of utah and when lihen it is taken into consi considers dern tion that this hole ma vas drilled with aith i i sm smil chill driller in chang goes the credit for this drill ng rig re cord probably more thrill were experienced in the drill nc of th a well than in fn my any hole so far put down in the county several strata of pas gas were struck which had a tremendous idous pressure shooting the tools up the hole and incidentally incident aill causing serious fishing jobs high gravity oil was encountered at several horizons in the crescent eagle the last strike being at a benth of feet when the tic well flowed barrels of high grade crude in fourteen hours salt water followed the initial flow of oil but this w ek eek it is reported that the salt water outburst was wits of a temporary nature bedric formation water mater which hall w now nearly all drained off end been bailed from the well oil and ga are increasing in the well and drilling drill inc is proceeding the navajo sand is the objective this ilia sand 1 13 said to be 80 feet thick at the out cropping crop pine pinc and nd the crescent eale drill will continue to drop until thia this sand has bren finally penetrated it is announce i As result of the oil and pas gas obtained in tie ue 1 crecent well weil eions are arc now inow being made to drill many ohp othe test holes an on the same series of folding which includes the floy fold thoo thompsons Thomp sons fold and the cisco anticline I 1 the utah oil refining Re finine company last jail fall put down a well N ell on the cisco structure some fifteen mil miles north west of the town toun of cisco at a dep de bof of 1065 feet a terrific gas pressure of 1665 1965 feet the flow being 00 60 mo cubic feet th well ran wild for several day days and the gas was ignited by lightning during an electric stern the fire destroyed the rig ind and derrick housey and it burned for nearly a week before it waa was aby the use of ex x plo elyes tres the weft was VMS finally capped and the gas ra is being used as fuel in inking sinking well no 2 located a quarter of a mile to the cast east and lower on the structure this well is down about 00 and the objective is the salt va sh 4 band which should be encountered at a slight additional depth in lh evev ent that AM veil well na 2 should prove dry the utah company it is ri iw M reported will drill another teet test wel well on the southern flank of the ure the cico cisco dome has been class ifield as a producing gas field by the U S geological survey the prodoc ing area being placed at acres two years ago the utah arizona and the cisco drilling association arizona companies commenced drilling a series of wells at cisco within the I 1 coming month I 1 it is reported that still sull another I 1 company has ha been organized in salt I 1 lake for the purpose of drilling a wo wall 11 at crescent this company includes many well known mining men i of the thos state two standard rigs will brought in it is reported and the acreage to be drilled lies between ard and Thomp thompsons sons drilling will be under way at the colorado river structures atlow moab the Alid midwest west ex company a subsidiary of the midwest refining and the utah southern companies has commenced operation on the rip big six dome located will vall cost in the neighborhood lof a quarter of a million dollar dollars from a geological standpoint the prospects for securing commercial production prod action in grand county are excel tio geologists are onam td that the colorado river structures in the lower carboniferous will beld oil in commercial quan titles should should any of these wells move successful then the race ie is on and within a wry very few months grand j county will be reaping its reward not only in increased revenue but in a boom bloom ot of prosperity that will mul our population many fold the drilling dr illin
