Show I Stop the Strikes I IF F THE coal strike ends today the most immediate peril perit now facing the nation will be removed But the peril perit will not be entirely removed unless union lab labor r will consent to set aside its its its- personal desires for a. a brief period and give the government and the people as a whole a chance to get back to a normal basis It is practically impossible to correctly estimate the cost of n the coal strike But for purposes of illustration suppose the miners have lost only thirty days' days pay with an average h of 4 per day that means an aggregate loss to the miners alone of But this is only half the story Thousands of nonunion em em- of the coal corporations corporations' were laid off when the mines shut l tf down Additional thousands have been made idle by the lack of ofF F- F fuel resulting in the closing of a great factories curtailment of business in inmany in many ways and th the annulling of hundreds of trains It seems safe to estimate that the coal strike has cost at least r 1 perhaps half again that amount perhaps double i that total It is a complete economic loss It constitutes a loss i that affects every person in the United States The co coal l strike means adding to the cost of living for all alI of rus US us As long as such strikes continue there can be no possibility of living costs being lowered j You cannot waste a dollar and save a dollar at the save time v 17 Likewise you cannot stop work and expect production to increase and liv living ng costs will not go down while production product on is har hampered We would not attempt to say th that at labor is not entitled to more more than it has been receiving This we believe is an argument I that need not be considered at this time I The real issue is the possibility of reducing prices If prices can be brought down the wages of all of us will b be automatically I increased that is the buying power of what we receive will ad ad- o. o vance And while the government and its agencies are making a I strong effort to cut out illegitimate profits we believe it behooves I i all alI of us to be patient for any mess that i is stirred up hinders or I makes impossible accomplishment of results by the government I |
