Show I Out of Politics II INCIDENTS INCIDENTS of the recent primary election should be enough to ton n i convince nce all observers of the desirability of putting the police department of Salt Lake City under civil service j Not all the policemen were active politically but several w were r They were doing politics while patrolling their beats and a policeman policeman if he desires is in a position to de demand and that certain people do certain things Y rr r- r In justice to Chief of Police White who himself was as a candidate candidate candi- candi date for mayor it can be stated that Mr White apparently made madeno ono no effort to influence the men men under him to support his candi- candi dacy fa y rhe The fact is that several members of the police force orce were I openly pei ly and actively campaigning against Mr White C t 4 But Sut a policeman should not b be in politics He should be beholden to no political party or faction He should not not have todo to tol l' l do do o politics to hold his job nor should he he b be permitted permitted- by the p power w r given him as a peace officer to attempt to influence the of the the people he is supposed to serve I I Under civil service regulations a member of the p police force I I will b b be protected against politics and he will be kept out of politics Now he is more or less forced to stand in for fear fear of losing I his is job When the time comes that he can devote his entire energies to the job he is appointed to fill and be assured that his position r f is secure no matter who is mayor or city commissioner his effiI effi- effi y v clency jenc will be greatly increased This result can only come with t I l t the e adoption of civil service regulations J |
