Show Iso so THE PEOPLE MAY KNOW NO Salt Lake coal bins bills are empty There are a few v homes here where here the shortage of coal is not noticed They are the homes owned o by men of means who vho are able to buy uy their winters winter's supply in iri tile the fall faU The majority of Salt Lake residents are not so fortunate The Tile larger part of the e population lives from frOIn month to month If they could buy ten ten- tons of coal at one time they would probably start the purchase of a home of their own 0 I IThe S a The lives of the masses are just justas as sacred as those of more fortunate classes They are made Blade of the same saine stuff although they may Inay have been stifled by some different en en- Warmth is just as necessary to their welfare as it is to the thc nian s. s j SO THE TE PEOPLE MAY AY Continued from pa page e 1 1 the he people want it It wants laws that will wilt prevent a recurrence of the cond condition tion because the tile people people peo peo- pie are entitled to them Why hy are public officials silent Is it if because their coal bins are full or is it because they are afraid of TH THE E BIG TH THINGS INGS THAT O OWN UTAH Either of these reasons would not satisfy the people people one one would mark the selfish official the official the other would brand the coward What would you do if you were a public official If you were district attorney mayor attorney general or a member of the legislature what whal would you do Their hands are not or should not be tied The Telegram is interested in knowing what the COMMON PEOPLE would do if they were honored by election to office for the protection of all classes alike It invites letters from its readers as to how they would conduct themselves in office when coal laid for weeks on side tracks Awhile while the people shivered The people can help solve the problem and in fixing the responsibility in this way They filey may even provide some reticent official with a suggestion which will lead to action The mayor of Des Moines la Ia confiscated coal He had no legal right right lie he just simply stole to protect the people of his town when town when the BIG THINGS wouldn't give them what hat they wanted for money Some Tooele residents recently raided a car of coal that they might have fuel to keep their families warm Stealing loses some of its sting when wilen public necessities are denied for denied for money The man who steals that his family may live is not necessarily a crook at heart The Des Moines mayor has something of the spirit of a faintly man nian He probably lived in a ahouse ahouse ahouse house where the heat didn't go with the the rent Our mayor has never ev even n asked for an inquiry The district attorney hasn't done much He hasn't been in office long but it doesn't take long to call a grand j jury ry A grand jury investigation might at least determine where the tile blame rests It might fix the responsibility whether it brought on punishment for the offending parties or not I The legislature has Ilas been in session a week It has whiled the morning hours away The coa coal situation was brought to their attention by the governor The wasted morning hours might well wel have been spent in a t first hand investigation of the coal shortage The solons may think they are ahead of their schedule but they are lagging behind in their duties so long as they l let t the tile coa coal situation go unnoticed It is time for a champion of the people to show himself in inthe th the legislature The time is ripe for forthe forthe forthe the of laws that will prevent a recurrence If the mayor the legislature and the district attorneys can do nothing Utah is surely within the grasp of the big things If this be true it is high time something was done to shake the clinging claws The TIle coal situation may be responsible for something more moe than physical suffering The vital ital statistics of Salt Lake have recorded many deaths from pneumonia and winter diseases during the past two months Pneumonia may visit A 0 warm arm household but it thrives best where heat is lacking lacking where where poor people shiver for want of enough fuel to keep them warm The vital statistics show that many babies have been claimed by pneumonia here this winter If th the public could see where the colds that brought on oil the disease that claimed these victims originated maybe the stealing of coal would cease to be a n crime Public officials can be no more popular than their acts It is is time for some or all an of them to act What do you think What would you do |
