roads I when wet are liable to damage the rubber cover It is recommended that the speed of the car be slightly accelerated accelerated crated and clutch depressed before coming up to crushed stone In ln Inthe Inthe the road is better to coast over sharp stones rather than cause more tire traction by leaving the gears engaged The rubber cover may receive nu nu- small snags and cuts if It rear wheels lose traction and spin around on wet pavement or in mud or sand If U rear wheels slip back car for a short distance then start forward When this fails jack up rear wheels and wrap with rope or place something s firm underneath to give the tires a a. grip The elasticity of the rubber permits acut acut a acut cut In the tread to expand when under the weight of machine and arid In contact with the road In this way such for for- i I eign matter as grit sand Band and pebbles are forced Into the cut With each revolution of the wheel the accumulation accumulation tion of foreign matter acts as a a wedge and further forces itself between b tween the cover and fabric of the tire It is not unusual for these lumps or mud boils if neglected to cause a complete separation of the tread An entire new cover can often be applied in a satisfactory manner providing the fabric Is In fairly good condition but it itis itis itis is more practicable and certainly less expensive to attend to td t the the real foundation and strength of the tire and it Is therefore highly important to protect it It Is suggested suggest d that after a long trip or at regular intervals the tires be examined examined other fatty substances are solvents of ot rubber tied lied parkways park and roads are not par par- harmful especially after the oil has nas as soaked into the roadway If It garage floors are not kept clean and ind the tires tires' stand in a pool of oil the read read softens and the traction strains n service stretches the rubber in a ay wavy y outline eventually causing ausing it to separate from the fabric body under under- neath Probably Pro ably the most damage Is lenc d from grease in differential w working out into the brake rums and then into the side walls of he e tires This may result from loose loose- bearings t too o much grease or from us- us ng grease not suitable for differential t Grease and oil can be very easily removed by a a rag saturated with gaso- gaso gaso- gaso line ine Gasoline although a solvent evaporates vapor tes quickly and if Applied in small quantities will not therefore cause ause any ny injury when used as a cleaning cleaning clean- clean ing ng agent Ordinary injuries to the rubber cover do not prevent nt successful but not often can the work be bewell bewell well veil done when materials have bee been affected by oil or grease If either soaks into tl the e fabric the repair work will invariably bly blister during vulcan- vulcan It is recommended that when either the he the tread or side walls show a a softening softening softening soften soften- ing effect from oil or grease the tire be so reversed on the wheel i i. i e. e e. e the damaged side wall changed to the out- out side This This' will usually protect the side sid sidewall wan wall from Crom further accumulation of grease the grease the change will also rest the tread read and fabric of ot the tire by reversing reversing revers- revers ing ng the direction of the traction strains Skid Anti Devices skid Anti devices are helpful under certain conditions but great harm will result from continued use when not actually rie needed ded Some devices are noisy and there Isa is isa isa a temptation to fasten same tightly to fo the he tires When this is done the extra pressure and flattening out of ot the tires tiresa a point in contact with the ground will cause the cross grips to cut and gouge into the rubber ribber cover and fabric under under- neath Some devices are not apt to be If it fitted too tight and the tire fire tire will spin around When cross grips become worn sharp and rough they should be replaced otherwise cutting cutting cut cut- ting of ot the cover 1 cannot be avoided avoided- moisture and dirt will do the rest FRAMING FRAMINGHAM HAM April 15
