Show t Paving in the Old Days and Now As Abe Martin 7 would say Who remembers the good old od days when paving was done right in Salt Lake 1 Before the system of squabbling and fighting lighting among contractors contractors contractors I tors was allowed to grow up here the people had a chance of getting getting getting get get- ting their streets paved in a reasonable time They didn't have i to raise an army to get their rights Of f course somebody had to kick though The fellows who were on the outside looking in just couldn't keep still while one fellow on the inside looking out was getting all the plums It was constantly charged that Pat Moran 1 and the American party city council had a working agreement Be that as it may we se had no such disgraceful paving deals as we arc are experiencing in inthis I this tills city now The rile howl went up for a business mens administration Well VeIl Salt Lake got a change but we could hardly C call it a business busi i ness hess mens change The contracting business was divided They all got their fingers in the pie and messed it up considerably i Now the contractor who used to do all the paving paving and and he be certainly did it in a businesslike manner manner has has the job of paving paying between the street railway tracks The contractor who has the job of paving the rest of the street can go only so far and then wait until the other fellow gets read ready It doesn't tal take e a very smart person to see what a tangled mess can be made of such a situation when there is no competent official 1 in authority to see sec that both contractors work together for the good of the public West Side Treated Badly Since the business mens adm administration has come into power there have been more rotten paving deals than the city had seen in its history before It has been difficult to get the work finished and a large part of it would better never neVel have been finished Ride over some of of- the ocean wave asphalt about town especially on South Fifth East and on South State and judge for yourself Now the west vest side and the east side are arc torn up and with winter coming on there is no prospect that the paving will be finished finished fin fin- fin I th this s year It is outrageous The west vest side property owners declare that the city commissioners COIn COIn- missioners promised them faithfully that the first job completed last spring would be the paving of West Vest Second South street from L the Rio Grande tracks to the Jordan river bridge j f The promise was not kept There is ever every prospect that the people who use that thoroughfare thoroughfare thor thor- will vill have to battle with mud and slush all winter inter But the east side is having its troubles too y y There is one thing certain certain no no partiality is shown in this in incompetent ini in- in i competent paving system i The rhe city commissioners and the city engineer allow the contractors contractors con con- tractors to ignore the rights of people all over town No section is excepted no one is favored The whole thing is a disgusting mess I Of course the reason is plain The people it That tells the whole story People Must Awaken I o S Salt lt Lake never had a good shaking up It never got excited excited ex ex- cited over anything The people have ha taken anything that came their way so long without protest that some politicians now believe believe be be- lieve the public has the hookworm disease and will wil never be cured The many h have ve allowed a few to think and act for th them n There can be no progress under such conditions The people have their theil rights but the they will never get them so long as they remain indifferent and silent They mUst assert their power get getS riled up and make a noi noise e. e If the stockholders in a badly managed company would humbly submit to bungling by their officers and directors year after year they would soon have no stock worth holding They would face bankruptcy or perhaps an assessment would have have to to be levied and some might rather give up their stock than go on n with a concern concern concern con con- cern that was run for the greed of a few instead of being operated for the good of the many The taxpayers in a city are in exactly the same position as the stockholders of a corporation l' l N We would like to see ee the them lis rise up iJ in their might and force action fion c ion oil on this paving scandal |
