Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Our basketball team dropped its first practice game to Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, as Coach Allsop used 14 men. It was the locals' first game, and they used it as an experiment ex-periment for a number of combinations. com-binations. One thing showed up, Sunny has to find a man to fill the post position, or wo will drop the close ones. But I think he will work that out, and we should win our share. The team goes down South during the holidays, holi-days, where they will work the kinks out in games with Richfield Rich-field and a number of other clubs down Dixie way. Utah won both of their game in the two day Round Robin a-gainst a-gainst Southern California and Oregon, while the Aggies beat Oregon but lost to the Trojans. The Red Skins came back from a South American trip in good shape and having played fourteen four-teen games, they wore ahead of the other teams in team play, but don't sell this Aggie club short, they have the makings. BYU wont up into Idaho and had things pretty much their own way. Wyoming has won a couple of practice games and Ev Shel-ton Shel-ton has another tall team. I look for Utah to take the Skyline tournament at Denver because at thus time they are farther along than the other teams. But this tournament should give us some iidea of he Conference strength. jl still say it is as tough as any of them. j Boxing has had a splendid year in Salt Lake, with Rex Lay-;ne Lay-;ne coming along as Utah's hope ! for another heavyweight champion champ-ion to put his name alongside of the one and only Jack Dompsey. Keith Nuttall looked like a good bet among the little fellows but of late Keith has lost some of his spark. Ernie Hunick never fully recovered from an automobile automo-bile accident and has finally hung up the gloves for good. The iRomo Polidori-Rex Layne fight ; has cooled down, but Remo is I still a good boy among the Iight-l Iight-l heavys. Jay Lambert, and Richardson Rich-ardson are taking things easy. This is about the picture in Utah boxing circles. Bowling is going big at me club and some good scores are being hung up by the local ten-pin ten-pin stars. The ladies league, bowling every Tuesday, is producing pro-ducing some very likely looking prospects. You will be hearing from a number of these ladies in the near future. We are planning on having two of Utah's fine:-t teams at the club some time before Xmas. The Brunswick team, composed of Doe Mascn, Bill Ward, Cromer, who is Utah's present match game champion, and Jack Wig-nail. Wig-nail. On the Mullctt-Kelly team we find Paul Chase, Gordy Wood, '. Doug Muir and "Ace" Smart. You can see by these names that l1 they are good. The locals will , send their best against them, ! Frank Zaccaria, Jim and George Paul Slotte, and Dan Delaney. They may let yours truly keep score. See you next week. AL I o |
