M Kelley of this city was honored Sunday by being presented with a a. gold life saving medal awarded by the National Council Council- of Boy Scouts of America America The presentation which took pace place at the Alpine stake priesthood union meeting held in the stake tabernacle was made by Dr Franklin S. S Harris president of the Brigham Young university Stake Scout Commissioner R R. E. E Baxter related the occurrence which I merited for Scout K Kelley the medal I On September 10 1922 while Kell Kelley y his younger brother Ralph and a companion scout Louis Robinson son of Mrs Jane C. C Robinson were swimming in Utah lake they chal- chal challenged chal challenged each other to swim to toan an anchored raft about quarter one-quarter of ofa a mile from shore Kelley reached the raft but Robinson seized with cramps called for help before goIng going going go- go Ing under Kelley swam to his as assistance assistance assistance as- as and though pulled under twice by the s. s struggling lad brought him close to shore where they were met with a boat First aid was administered by Scout Kelley to restore the boy to consciousness Accompanying the medal from scout headquarters was a a. certificate certificate cate signed by Daniel C. C Beard national national national na na- na- na scout leader Present at the meeting were David David David Da Da- vid T T. T Lewis of Spanish Fork vice president of the council council council coun coun- cil Dr Hughes of Spanish Fork chairman of the finance committee of Palmyra district Scoutmaster Anderson of Palmyra district Deputy Deputy Deputy Dep Dep- uty Scout Commissioner Carl F. F Eyring of Provo Only 86 of these medals have been awarded in the United States by the national council five of which were presented last year |
