to Imbibe the spirit of the early pioneers and raise everything they need to Import as little as possible and export all aJI that c can n be spared In In olden times the early days of our church in Utah said President Smith there was a great devotion to sustenance self-sustenance and home ture There was a local providence dwelt upon in those days that is still sUlI new and applicable to all the people of Utah and the intermountain coun coun- try We were content and happy then by using only the things we could produce at home Conditions then made it necessary to be econ economical mical to provide everything by our own energy energy energy en en- ergy and skill But we ve have become wealthy and nd careless Money is plentiful plen plena and transportation facilities have been expanded Because of these conditions con con- we now noy seem to prefer to to patronize industries that do not contribute contribute con con- tribute to our welfare rather than those at home SUPPORT HOME INDUSTRY It is our duty to support home in hi in industries even where a few tew cents more are necessary to avoid the shoddy shoddy- that is heaped upon us It is deplorable that Utah made products should have to seek a market in New York Sa Sail Safi Francisco and even in for foreign lands President Smith declared that Lat ter day ter-day day Saints are daily purchasing purchasing- things they do not ne need d. d He told them they were also paying payin big prices for things they could just as easil easily produce at home It is a shame and a a disgrace to our credit that we cant can't produce enough poultry and eggs and foodstuffs to tOt supply our own demands he said said We allow thousands of dollars dollars' worth of fruit to rot lih r every year when in the early days this logical reason reason why every farmer gardener sheep raiser and hennery owner cannot produce all he needs PLEA TO CONSERVE I am not saying this in a spirit of faultfinding I am merely making a plea to conserve conservo the products of the soil the flocks and the herds berds and to produce more food I want it understood understood under under- stood that there isn't a feeling In my soul or a a. fibre in my being that is disloyal My only thought and prayer Js Is to maintain the principles of liberty lib erty Justice and freedom we have enjoyed enjoyed en en- joyed in the pastI past I F believe In th the constitution of the United States and I know It is a docu docu- I anent ment that was inspired to teach the freedom of man to do right to believe behove believe be be- lieve hove according to the dictates of our own consciences and to insure the rights of freedom liberty and Justice for ourselves as well as for our I neighbors and fellowmen But I cant can't conscientiously indorse the actions of some of our leading men on certain national measures Despite his recent physical ailment President Smith was vigorous and forceful in his discourse He expressed heartfelt satisfaction at the large attendance attendance attendance at at- at the conference declaring that to him it was an evidence of the sincerity and interest the Saints are taking in the work In which the church is engaged President Smith told the congregation congregation congregation tion that he was not so strong in body as he was at the last conference but that he hoped nothing serious was the the close of his keynote address addres President Smith read a statistical re report report re- re port of the receipts and expenditures of the church for 1917 The report also contained a record of vI vital tal statistics in the church during the past year The only comment of the president on the report was his advice that the seven widowers out of every 1000 members of the church get married as soon as possible if they are not too old Anthon H.
