P fm stance s ance John VaS was aiming at a duck then finally dropped his gun L a companion asked shoot it said John another duck swam in front of it A AIN I IN DAYS BEFORE THE WAR EV ELMER I. I GOSHEN was editor of The Telegram am last Tuesday REV When he issued instructions to the sports department he merely said Go Go right ahead All parsons are not o easy to work for The last one we labored I lH under remarked And you have ha to split it too or you wont won't get the dinner ollo 0 ri THE POOR FISH T IS only a couple of weeks more until June 15 J. J Then the anglers will be in in their glory They'll be evacuating Salt Lake in the same general way the Huns did Chateau Thierry They'll M start the night of the fourteenth in autos limousines trucks Rolls- Rolls Royces Fords motorcycles and every other sort of a motor driven vehicle Then they'll be riding out on horseback in carriages wagons trains streetcars and every other way just to get to the streams and pull one out The he e streams ms will be as busy as a three legged d dog g with fleas i f When the season opens the anglers will find the streams in a rather poor condition as far fsr as fish go There will be a lot of fish of course i perhaps as many as last year but year but for a number of years the streams have been run down and the sportsmen will find that they are in the same condition this year II If Active work in m replenishing the streams and protecting the fish has I begun About anglers of the state have joined together and formed the State Fish and Game Protective association which has more than fifteen branches in the state Their main idea was to see that the state fish and game law are obeyed that the streams are and that the best interests of the outdoor sportsmen in Utah are served 1 The organization is alive It is up and doing things thins Already fish have been procured for planting in in the streams of Salt Lake county alone The Salt Lake organization is making arrangements for a million and a half more Other county organizations are hard at the same kind of work If the plans are successful there will be plenty of fish in another nother year or two In the meantime fishermen must cooperate with the state department and with the state organization The best method is joining in the work of the thel association by taking out a membership But then a good work may be done by obeying to the the letter laws l Anglers should tat take only the proper size fish They should never take more than the limit Iy I They should not fish before or after the season I They should not spear net or dynamite fish f They should see that others do not disobey the he law They should be be careful of the rights of the farmer so that he will will be more re generous with the angler rif They should not leave unsightly camps along the streams I Z K The farmer should be more generous with the angler Sl He should closely watch that no fish are stranded in his irrigation ditches farmer Only by closest cooperation of the state department t the tho he angler anler and the can results be obtained PROGRESS OF THE RACE J HE week has been rather disappointing 11 Not from the standpoint of games for Salt Lake has wons won ts s share The real trouble comes from an an m apparent relapse of the ees The remarkable development of Cravath's crew in the week before put the fans on an edge for some good baseball The boys fielded perfectly and perfectly and brilliantly They played like a well veIl oiled machine There wasn't a a hitch or halt or the least hesitation livery very very man was just where he was wanted and doing his duty well The hitting pf the Bees was was as a revelation Every man on n the t ft am clouted them out in a healthy fashion Cravath and Wilhoit continued i their heir remarkable strides upward while Brown was the sensation of the team and league He just about broke the worlds world's record for home run hitting when he hit ply four-ply swats in four games r This week something has happened They are still clout clouting ng the ball iball but the class team work and punch has disappeared All I teams foams t ms are subject to these erratic spells and were we're- hoping that the slump ip is merely an off day or two In the field for the last few days the men have been quite I impossible The infield has been particularly bad Friday Jourdan de a couple of bad bad errors Sand Saud contributed d his Siglin had a ide It and the pitchers notably Bromley and Gould made misplays gown fown own is about the only one who has been doing consistently good food goodA work H A 11 J I In the outfield Strand Stran has lIas had I a ba bad w week k He lIe n made ade a aa 1 I a number of errors and a misplay or two which wInch didn't get down in h lie book fc f I But next week is another week The pitchers who last week l J 11 performed remarkably well Rieger Leverenz Gould and Bromley ill be called upon for some me harder work They will face the tough VVo-i San Francisco batting order The Bee slugging seems to bei bea be i I a high class order so if the old time the class in the field can be beI I the Bees should get away nicely Sacramento which was within striking distance of the Seals S he ne he league leaders suffered heavy reverses through the weeks week's play Jut Dut t of the first four games played Los Angeles took three Sacra Sacramento mento m nto retained second position but dropped heavily in percentage i os Angeles in third position jumped dumped in avera averages es but not enough I Io j o 0 pass ass the Senators The rhe only change in the standing came with Seattle and Vernon he lie mopped up on the Tigers and captured three gam games s f our As a result Seattle took the tail end cud of Cf the first division place while Vernon dropped to the leadership of the second vision iI t San Francisco has lIas not fared so well either The rhe Seals dropped ll Dumber number of points in percentage the Oaks giving them a great I wi n. The rhe Oaks' Oaks percentage remained steady Both Salt Lake and i iL t L jo j ortland climbed a bit but tJ their relative positions r remained the the the'S theS I S ame oW The teams team arc are bun bunching and if Sat Salt Lake and Portland nd show some iconic le class a hot race will develop within a few weeks with all of he h 6 teams participating J |
