Show 1 Injury W Received in Prize right fight Is I s Not ot otT T 10 Be Compensated State Industrial Commission Deni Denies Denis De De- De- De ni nies nis s Application of Dewey Ramsdell When a man is injured while engaged In a boxing match or prize fight in Utah ho is not entitled en entitled entitled en- en titled to compensation under the tho I 1 workmen's compensation law of bf f the state This is the decision of the industrial commission in the case of Dewey Ramsdell working under the name of Jimmie Coy Coy alleged that on March 18 18 1921 he was Injured by participating ing in an amateur boxing match or bout held under the auspices of the Wasatch Athletic club of Og Og- den He said that while participating participating participating in the match he sustained an injury to his hand by breaking certain bones He lIe asked for compensation com com- I n under the provisions of the e workmen's compensation act After an investigation of the matter the commission finds that on the date named Jim Downing doing business under the name of the Wasatch Athletic club was to give ghe a public boxing exhibition There were several bouts for which a certain prize was offered and that Dewey Ramsdell known as Jimmie Coy entered one of the bouts that in participating in said bout Coy sustained an injury ry to his hand as alleged that said bouts were public and announced some days before they were held that for said bout the Wasatch Athletic club paid to Coy 1250 as asa asa asa a prize that a week before the bout in in question Coy substituted for another man in a bout in which he received 10 as a prize The conclusions of the commission commission commission commis commis- sion are that public boxing ex exhibitions or bouts mean nothing more nor less than a prize fight that at atthe atthe atthe the time of the injury the applicant applicant applicant cant Coy was engaged in an illegal act and that applicants applicant's claim claih for compensation should be denied and it is so ordered The commission quotes s section of the compiled laws of Utah which reads as follows Every person who engages in instigates encourages or promotes any ring or prize prUe fight or any other premeditated premeditated premeditated pre pre- meditated fight or contention without without without with with- out deadly weapons either as principal principal principal prin prin- cipal aide aid aide second umpire surgeon surgeon sur sur- geon or otherwise is punishable I by imprisonment in in the state prison not exceeding two years i |
