| Show w r r r t tI I I I It t L Danger Threatens Utah's Reputation It is time for Salt Lake to talk turkey about the citizens' citizens military training camp scheduled to begin at Fort Douglas August 21 and end 1 September 16 Captain Wallace of the regular army who has charge has announced that on July 15 he o of the tho preliminary arrangements will titan recommend an abandonment of the plan here unless men by that that time tim have hav actually signed the agreement to take part in the he encampment encampment en en- and have furnished t their measurements for army uniforms At present plesent only have actually done their duty a and d signed d the agreement to take part in the encampment and when it is considered that these men represent Utah Idaho Montana Colorado Wyoming Wyoming Wyo Wyo- V yo- yo ming and Nevada one one has has to hang his head in shame at the wretched showing There have been all kinds of promises from clubs and from big b sirl ss firms to send men to the camp to take part but these promises promises promises prom- prom have not not been f fulfilled l At the rate things are going now there is hardly any chance for Salt Lake to be saved the terrible disgrace and humiliation of seeing this camp amp abandoned when the camps in all other parts of the country been crowded and hardly able to accommodate the many ln business sines and professional men who availed themselves of the tle opportunity of offered them by Uncle Sam to learn at least the rudiments s of modern warfare f The he Rotary club the Commercial club the Alta club and the University club in Salt Lake ake should at once send scud the J members to the recruiting headquarters in the C Commercial club and sign the slip The 1 lie trouble with the big men in this town is that too many of i them have been pointing out to their underlings to to do all the preparedness preparedness pre pre- IH w work ork This is not the spirit of a true democracy I The Th joung young men those who are not married those who are arc physic physically cally in fine condition are arc doing their duty by joining the militia for c 1 imm immediate diate active service along the border and in Mexico Now a summer camp amp should have the support of the married men the older men who are not in physical condition at present to take lake up the hard work on the border but later may be needed if there is a second or third call for men to do Uncle Sams Sam's fighting No man man can tell when that call will Avill come The military training camp is planned to show these men how to take care of themselves teach them sanitation in the camp teach them the use of or modern arms used in the United States army and also teach them the first lesson in field work and the manual of arms 4 4 A No man can become an expert soldier in one training but every sensible man can learn many l lessons to prove prove of great value should his country ever be in need o of his service in warfare One One member of the Alta club at a recent meeting there a well known physician in this city showed the mental attitude of too many I Salt halt Laker Laken slackers He Ire said that business men and professional men could not afford to attend these encampments that they have work too important elsewhere to give their time ime to military service It was his idea that they should simply see that their d do all the hard work and learn to do all the fighting Evidently this doctor thinks think that men of his class should sit back and enjoy all the protections that a strong army army provides while they themselves give no service whatever to their flag v Another member of the Alta club made a motion which received a second and quite quit a bit of debating that the slob club let a few of or its w waiters attend the encampment as a sort of a summer summer vacation wile He po po pointed ted out that fact that not all the regular waiters would t be needed luring luring during the summer because many of the Alta club mem- mem llers were were out of town He thought it would be nice to give the then n waiters a change of exercise take view of the of the ther n Men glen Ien who cannot any bigger importance try training r Wing r g camp could not be of much value to their country under any co t o oThe 1 The Alta AHa club the Rotary club the Commercial club and the University ity club have all aU done a lot of talking about how hov they would like to aid this movement They are not however enrolling their j men nr There are too many reading room loom patriots i Many members of some of these clubs are used to lives of or luxury or are accustomed to perform no harder physical work than alighting 5 from their automobiles and walking to the elevators in their places rc h of business 1 r They evidently are afraid of soiling their lily white hands with su such degrading work as handling a rifle or perhaps using a pick and shovel in trench work during the military camp What Uncle Sam needs and asks for are men of capacity executive executive tive tivo ability energy and education The government needs men for these training camps who know how to grasp ideas quickly The r army officers will teach them the main points about modern warfare and men men without the ability to understand and put into execution these things will really be wasting the governments government's money v J The business men and anti the professional men of this community who have haye lla had l the advantages of education and training certainly should not neglect their duty to to their government by remaining i l passive while the nation is asking them to prepare f for l' l possible service No Not only from front the standpoint of loyalty to the governments government's I j. j flag but also from the standpoint of loyalty to this city this state 49 the intermountain country it behooves the men of or this section to t sign ign the slip at once send in their measurements for uniforms so that t they r can get in and do o their little part in this great preparedness scheme Selene which has prove proved l itself a necessity in this country I It I It w wil will n not do to delay July 15 will be here very soon and at atthe v th the r rate te we we have been going there is no hope of or obtaining enlist- enlist unless every m man luau n quickly scents the danger of losing this encampment encampment en en- and does his Ins duty a The time to act is now and we want to point out to these bi big birr b bt J t r organizations such as the Alta club the University club the Co Comi ConI Con Com i m mercial club lub and t the e Rotary club the harm that will will come como to to this city this state and the intermountain country should this encampment b be e 1 1 t called off Word would go out to the rest of the nation that there is n no o patriotism in the intermountain country It would be a blow that Salt Lak Lake Lakey especially would not recover from in many many years years I The nation now nw expects patriotism and will be very ery quick t tt to a t I I condemn any section that seems to be found wanting in ill this grea great t II virtue 4 Lk i l Salt Salt Lake has put in a strong bid bid for or a brigade post at Port Fort t J i Douglas Douglas' gla and for an al' al army y munitions plant It would have no show shoe v f iu jn the world of getting either of these coveted prizes should should the en encampment eni Ii i I f here be abandoned on account of lack of interest i THE TilE TELEGRAM t has done its best tp arouse interest here inthis in is i this movement and would hate to see this blow come to this section I i of or the the country But we wo have almost grown weary Yeary of urging men todo to todo do what is their plain duty and if the rest of the people in this town can stand the humiliation that will como come if this camp plan fails we WC I Iguess guess we we c can can n. n It is up to the business and professional men to d decide now whether or not they will see sec their city state and aud intermountain n f country disgraced disgrace There is no time for delay |
