| Show L Editorials of the Day DANGER DANGER IN UNBALANCED TRADE From Foreign Trade Bureau Philadelphia Philadelphia Philadel Philadel- phia Commercial Museum l The foreign trade which the United States is now doing in in merchandise is ole oie s sided ded for the country's good Commodities are being bought abroad at the rate of ot over one and a half blU bli lion dollars a year and sold to foreign countries at a rate of three billion dollars dollars dol dol- lars a year There is a disposition to point with pride to these record breaking sales and to this huge balance to emphasize the benefit to the manufacturer and farmer to the factory worker and the farm farmhand hand There is' is is no denying tho the fact that this heavy demand for American goods has bas brought exceeding prosperity to many industries s and that for some of them It has meant abnormal ity Yet the country should not allow Itself to become so absorbed in the contemplation of ot this condition as to forget that foreign trade is essentially a n. trade in commodities and that it must approximately balance There Thero Is too much of the feeling that this country country country coun coun- try has generally sold more than it has bought and that somehow or other these huge salEs Bales will continue because lSe foreign countries must have the goods The only adequate remedy for the present situation is to loan freely to foreign countries by investing capital in them In proportion to their legitimate legitimate legitimate mate needs and by establishing local credits for them In proportion to their wealth and credit Such loans will provide provide pro pro- vide foreign customers with the money with which to pay for their heavy pur pur- chases It is the only way in which the present export trade can be supported and tho the stronger foothold that is 18 being gained in foreign markets made per per- manent |
