Show WEST POINT Another class has graduated at at West Vest Point of them will Avill go out into the tho army as second Ji lieutenants most of their names as published shed in inthe the tho papers will Avill be ho forgotten in a year or two tAvo but possibly fifty years ears hence some of them will Avill have written their names upon the immortal heights wh where re they will Avill be bo seen for all time to come That Thatis is s the hope in iii every heart that is what makes makos boys hoys attend West Vest Point and Annapolis and devote their Jives lives to the service of or their countr country where every danger can be found foun Just prior to the breaking out of tho the Mexican l war a rage went Avent over the eastern papers against Vest West Point The papers stated how many had graduated in the prece preceding ing twenty five years and how low few could be recalled Then came caine on the Mexican war Avar and anti after that war Avar was Avas over oyer there was not a reproach hurled at West Vest Point for many and many a year ear And what an array there was Avas Of those who I ent to Mexico l to get their first baptism of fire more than a score after distinguishing themselves there became leaders of both the union and confederate confederate confederate con con- federate armies There was Avas Grant and Sherman and Lee Leo and Bragg and Bragg and Joe Johnston and Albert Sidney Johnston and aud Stonewall Jackson and Lyon and Rosecrans and many man many more and to read the names it looks as though fate was Avas even then making its decree decrees and calling over oyer the tho names that were eventually to be honored This year ear at the commencement the roll call aIl of the tho dead was Avas read at the alumni meeting and that list this year em contains thirty-seven thirty from the army active and retired and six from civil life The oldest oldest oldest old old- est graduate that passed Vay R avay was Avas Gen M. M D. D L. L Simpson of the class of 44 The oldest of those present at the meeting Gen Alexander B. B Webb of the class of 50 A Among Anong nong the rest there was Avas Gen John Jolin W. W Barlow of the class of 61 W. W B. B 65 Gen Con Horace Porter 60 Co Col J J. B. B Quinn 66 F. F L. L Hills 66 Gen John Pitman 67 Capt Henry Metcalf 68 Loyal Farragut 69 and a good many other 69 men It is a great school It and Annapolis are the nurseries of youths consecrated to their country's service and we believe among all the graduates since the schools were founded not one has proved inefficient in manhood or in those higher attributes which make American citizenship respected |
