Show UNITED STATES MAY ESTABLISH A NAVAL STATION ON COAST WASHINGTON July 30 It It is ilS probable probable probable able that another naval station will be created upon the Pacific coast as the result of the forth forthcoming Oming visit there of Admiral Capps chief of naval construction construction con con- of the navy and Admiral Cowles chief of the equipment bureau The former left Washington today for New York where he will be joined by Admiral Cowles and the two will go together to the Pacific coast to make a thorough inspection of the yards ana anc stations on that coast and report upon upon upon up up- on the future needs of the navy in that quarter Admiral Hollyday chief of the bureau bureau bu bu- bu- bu i reau roan of yards and docks will follow these two officers to San Francisco on ona ona ona a similar errand This will involve a avery avery avery very careful examination of the Mare Island navy yard and that at Bremer Brenier ton The resources of the two navy yards which are the only ones on a mile 2000 stretch of shore land are scarcely sufficient to make even temporary temporary tempo tempo- repairs and dockings that will be required by Admiral Evans' Evans battleship fleet if it makes only a temporary visit to the coast Hence the inspection of of these yards will probably result in recommendations recommendations recommendations rec rec- to Congress at its approaching approaching ap ap- approaching ap- ap session for tor a considerable enlargement of the plans at both places The difficulty of procuring skilled labor la bor Dor in these yards and especially at Bremerton will also be considered with witha a view to making the conditions more attractive to such labor if by no other means than by assuring the men of continuous con employment at good wages But from froma a n naval val paint of view probably ably of more interest is the proposition proposition proposition tion to establish a naval station at San Diego Cal which will be be examined from all points of view by the visiting Admirals The harbor at this point possesses superior advantages as a naval naval naval na na- na- na val anchorage There are good railroad rail rail- road connections assuring abundant of coal overland if water communication com corn is cut off in war time and the harbor can easily be mad made imp e The distance of San Die Diego o. o southward from San Francisco and upon the same line with the projected Panama canal would also make it an an advantageous coaling point Of course the consent of Congress would be necessary to rendel render render ren ren- der del effective its selection |
