Show l' l I I I THE ITHE DASTARD AGAIN I The dastard who presides over the organ organ of the West Temple street it seems to tous tous Republican p party on us is as imprudent as he is vile asserted that he had letters He again yesterday r from Nevada charging numerous sins of omission i and commission upon this writer i i Of course he is a dastard and a liar No Nevada 1 man ever wrote him any such letter the purported ri letter carries its own denial on its face r- r So much for the present of him Now a few I I words on what he takes as a text for his tirade 1 I He is very much incensed that in an address b before be be- fore the American club in this city the writer of this said a few words in criticism of President Roosevelt and the majority o of the Senate He admits that any i citizen has a right to criticise the policy of any public m man n including the President but something in that address address seems to call up all his simulated l tion We say simulated because all his life he has hasi i I 1 never breathed a Republican breath and during the I 1 seven years in whiSh which h this writer was doing what he could to uphold the Presidents President's hands this man for forat forat I at least five years of that time was denouncing him himin himI j I in the vile vocabulary which has been brought to the I perfection of infamy by men somewhat of his class 1 he I but none so infamous as I 4 What he particularly objects to is it was said I i that the President of the United States States' and a maJ majority ma- ma 4 J of the States Senate to make sure of ofT T a a few electoral votes slapped in inthe the face the sentiment sentiment senti- senti r ment of honest manhood in this Nation did what they could to throw filth upon the robes of the pure I women of this Republic who by millions cried out to them to keep untainted the sacred American home They condoned condon d the crime of breaking faith with the Gov Government of this Republic They did what they could to undo the inspired r- r work ork of the fathers of our country who disenthralled r religion from bondage to temporal power and in the same paragraph placed the rule of native land in the hands of all her children making as they thought impossible forever in this Republic a hereditary monarchy or hereditary aristocracy or a quasi- quasi hereditary hierarchy hierarch 1 r v. v There is only one joint to all that If If it isn't t true it was vas very wrong to state jt t if it is true then it was very very necessary to state it Now let us anaF analyze ana ana- F lyie it a little We know that a majority of the Senate voted to seat Senator Smoot we all know that the President used his official influence to secure that majority and that after it was over he wrote a congratulatory letter to Senator Knox Knot because of his speech and vote on that occasion We Ve know furre further fur fur- re ther that when Mr 1 Smoot was fir first t a cand candidate dater in his own impetuous way President Roosevelt permit permit- J ted a dispatch to be sent here protesting against his nomination because he was an apostle o of the Mormon Mormon Mor- Mor Mor 1 mon church k We know that when President Roosevelt was a aS S candidate for President that one Clarkson who had f formerly been an attorney of the church church a and d had received a retainer out of all reason for the services performed came here and and traded with the heads of the Republican party and the heads of the church securing the electoral vote of this State and of Idaho for President Roosevelt We Ve know that from that time timeout out President Roosevelt was always exceedingly friendly to Senator S Smoot oot and we know as s well as I anything can be known that has not been absolutely r demonstrated that the electoral vote of this State next year is pledged to Mr 1 Roosevelt if he is a candidate candidate can can- or to any friend of his who may be a condi- condi V date v That the Senate and the President slapped in inthe the the- face the sentiment of honest manhood in this 4 1 Nation Kation Is clear enough because th the evidence right F before them was was wa that pol polygamy and church rule ruie areas ar are J as much a part of the creed here as they were when r. r the Republican party in its national platform denounced denounced denounced de de- polygamy as a h twin in relic of barbarism it I i and as to their doing what they could to throw filth upon the robes of the pure women of this Republic Republic Republic Re Re- public it is only necessary to say th that t ten millions of women petitioned them on the evidence shown before the Smoot investigation h to d den deny ny him his seat r f t and when Mrs made a personal appeal to the President she and other ladies of the committee lie turned their petition down I j. j To gain Statehood the men who rule TIlle the Mormon rl l' l ch church an and wh who are the church chuch from ro day to da day r t pledged their word and honor that lol polygamy should cease and that never more should the Mormon people be interfered interfere with in their political beliefs or 01 acts Those pledges have ever every one been broken as every person in Utah knows hence so f far r as s the vote in the thet t Senate and the influence of the President were concern concerned con con- cern ed that offense was condoned The fathers made a complete separation Reparation of church and in State State-in our Government I If f f The evidence was clear before the President and Senate that there is a government which is an imperium imperium im- im m- m in imperio here under which Reed Smoot t was elected Senator under which the Mormon vote 1 o lof of this State is turned this year ear to one party part and next r f year to another that Senator Smoot was elected h by that authority r that no American citizen has the the hy f slightest chance for an office here except through r fj w that favor that now as was stated this State is isi i r ruled by a quasi quasi- quasi hereditary hierarchy These are all facts as plain as the sunlight Hence if a fair criticism of the Pr President and a majority of the Senate of tle United States is right that critT 4 S. S cism cisin is as just as was ever eyer delivered |
