Show TWO QUEER ITEMS Two rather amusing items come to us from Europe One i is a fierce speech in jn th the German Reichstag Reichstag Reichstag tag protesting against admitting foreign students into the German universities The radical who talked showed that tl tHe e foreign students were were trying to outdo native German students that they spent their vac vacations in study and had the best scats seats at atthe atthe atthe the lectures This seems all the more comical when whenn we reflect that it has seemed to be a study with Germany how to draw students to her schools which sh she has lIas never failed to advertise as the best bestin in the world The speech did not make much impression upon th the German Parliament and was quickly and sharply answered but the fact that it was made at all is the wonder Her schools have been a a real asset to Germany Germany Germany Ger Ger- many many for many years both her scientific schools and andler her ler schools of music and other fine arts And they ther have lave been good for Germany in another sense The foreign pupils have been an inciting stimulant to German jerman students to work harder The oth other r item comes from France There the growers grape-growers of southern France are protesting to the he Government against the further increase e of the sugar beet industry in northern France It is as though the cane sugar manufacturers of Louisiana were to protest to the Washington Government against the further extension of the sugar beet-sugar interest interest in in- terest in the North and West Fortunately thus far all the sugar makers in the United States have not been able to keep up with the increasing demand for sugar Last year if f we remember correctly some was paid j out b by our our country for the sugar imported However it is probably natural for those little empires and republics be beyond ond the sea sea to to become narrowed in their hard nard life struggle |
