No man has written of himself or his business, all articles having been compiled by a Bulletin representative as he saw conditions. These men are all leaders in their lines of endeavor, and the cooperation of, those citizens of Salt Lake City who helped to make this department possible is sincerely appreciated by the publishers of the Bingham Bulletin. r- - ion is E- - raise and , , ut a just SJoH many services formed in the ness and wavJ ; civic act putation for the ,3 ; duct of his busineH greater than the honest practices! actenze hisvery , we congratulate ; on his splendid that he shall conS the people of Salt V vicinity. MAXFIELD In compiling this review of progressive Salt Lake City busi-ness people, we have endeavored to select those citizens who, by the manner in which they have ' conducted themselves and their . businesses, have caused the pub-lic to spot in them, certain quali-ties over and above the average. Such a man is Mr. A. V. Maxfield owner and operator of the Max-fiel- d .Candy Co., who is well known to many of our readers because he has many friends and customers in this area. Mr. Maxfield's main interests have not been solely confined to his own business and private af-fairs, but have also included his contributions, in one form or an-other to those projects of a civic nature which come within the scope of his activities. He never neglects these obligations. A. V. Maxfield is a man of wide experience whose exploits in the business and civic life of Salt Lake City and vicinity merit more than passing attention and the writer is privileged to pay this brief tribute to a man who well deserves more credit than is accorded him here. ' O - MORONI KRIEPL Gray, prominent Salt Lake City general contractor. It is because of the successful operation of such businesses as his that Salt Lake City has earn-ed the reputation of being one of the more progressive communi-ties in this district. Mr. Gray is a man who has been conspicuously successful in spite of the fact that he has often neglected his own affairs to de-vote a part of his time and efforts to the successful promotion of some civic project. It is considered a privilege to include Bob Gray in this Salt Lake City review and to publicly give him credit for his success in Business and for his many con-tributions to the general welfare of his city. --O ' GEORGE W. LOFTUS and GENE ROSE In every community there are a number of citizens who can be pointed out as having taken a three-fol- d part in the onward progress of th city. Two well-know- n business men of Salt Lake City who belong in this category are Mr. George w. Loftus, owner and Mr. Gene Rose, manager of the Loftus Magic & Novelty Shop. Their leadership in their line distributor, distributing the Lo-He- at Stainless Steel Cookware in the intermountain area, is a man who has never failed to lend a hand when it comes his turn to help on some worthy project pro-moted for the general betterment of Salt Lake City and the adjac-ent territory. ; Mr Pressgrove takes a genu-ine pleasure in this method of showing his appreciation for his success in the cookware business and in doing so recognizes his civic responsibilities to the home community. It is such men as Philip Press-grov- e who become acknowledged leaders in both business and civic activities and we compliment him for having attained that position in his city. O "ALBERT E. MAXFIELD In critical times such as these, it takes business men of more than average ability to carry on their operations successfully. In making this statement the man we have in mind is Mr. Albert E. Maxfield, owner of Maxfield's Top & Upholstering Shop, who has a wide circle of personal friends and customers ' scattered throughout this entire district, many of whom reside in our own community. Lake City and vicinity to assist some civic project, that she has not responded and helped to tne fullest extent of her ability to further that project. Thus she has frequently sacrificed her per-sonal interests to promote some worthy cause. . Because of this Kay Omuro has proven herself to be a good citizen of whom her city and this district have every reason to feel justly proud. O. 0. 0. KISSELBURG To be a consistent booster of the home community often takes courage and plenty of optimism. It is because of his unfailing faith in --the future of Salt Lake City and the surrounding country, and his unflagging efforts to promote its development, that Mr. O. O. Kisselburg, a connoisseur of good food and owner of Marie's Coffee Shop, is selected now for this brief tribute. He has froved very ably that he is a coffee shop operator of unusual ability, for it is largely due to his ideals of service coup-led with the determination to serve only the very best, that Marie's Coffee Shop holds its high position in the public's fa-vor. He is a man of sound busi-ness judgment whose ideas have V K - ' We wish in this edition to paj tribute to Mr. Gus Miller, a con-- ' noisseur of good food and ownei and operator of the Ritz Embassy Club Cafe, for his operation oi the club and his many servicei : to Salt Lake City. He has a splen-- ' did record of achievement in the the city. - business life of Mr Miller probably has as wide a circle of friends as any othet man we could name because he is just naturally the kind of a man ' who makes friends with almost everybody and is at pains to con-duct himself in such a manner as to deserve the respect and good will of all who know him. A city . is fortunate in being able to num-ber among its more progressive citizens business men of this type. He is also always ready and willing to lend his support to the promotion of any project which promises to benefit this entire district. He may be depended up-on and his services to the people are too many in number to be described here. It is sufficient to say that we consider Gus Miller an asset to the community and a progressive business man of who his city may be proud. o EVAN KJAR Our issue today proposes to call the attention of our readers to some of those progressive and civic minded people who have contributed their share of time and energy to the building up of Salt Lake City and the surround-ing territory to the position of prominence which it enjoys at present. One of the men to whom we wish to call the attention of our readers is Mr. Evan Kjar, owner of the Kjar Electric Co., a busi-ness man who has never spared himself in his aggressive march forward and one whose competi-tors respect as much as do all others with whom he comes in contact. Mr. Kjar is at all times con-scious of his civic responsibilities and may be depended upon to meet in every detail the many opportunities which present them selves to be of service to his city. Mr. Kjar's record of achievement is one of which he may well be proud. His value to his city and this district is an established fact and we hasten to give him the credit which is justly due. - GRANT, and J. t and CLIFFORD ANDERhO Salt Lake City owes much tc those progressive citizens , whe active part m the have taken an growth and progress , o the citj nd who have helpe Jo the business center this pari of the state. Their main interests nave al-ways been devoted to the welfare and building up of a greater Salt Lake City and they have con-tributed more than their share towards that end. The Marshs and Anderson are wholly deserving of our sincere praise and these few words o! commendation are but a just rec-ognition for the many activities they have conducted on behall of the general welfare of the community. We trust Grant and J. C. Marsh and Clifford Ander-son shall continue to serve Salt Lake City and vicinity, for many years. F. GRIEP Mr F. Griep, the owner and operator of the F. Griep Heating & Sheet Metal Works, is one of those progressive heating and sheet metal works operators and business men who has always done bis bit to maintain the pres-tige of Salt Lake City as a lead-ing metropolis of this section of the state. He has always worked for the development of the city and his many services are worthy of sincere appreciation. Mr. Griep has proven himself worthy of extended mention and these few words are not really adequate recognition for the many services which he has per-formed in the promotion of pub-lic welfare. His well earned suc-cess as a business man is easily understood, knowing as the peo-ple do his widespread reputation for the honesty which character-izes all of his business dealings. It is a combination of technical knowledge, mechanical, skill and business ability which has ele-vated Mr. Griep to a position of leadership in his line. He is completely aware of his civic responsibilities and is wide awake to the many opportunities for service and always ready and willing to lend his support to any project which promises to bene-fit the community as a whole. We compliment F. Griep on his ac-complishments and sincerely wish for him continued success. His contagious optimism ana freely expressed belief in the as-sured future prosperity of the people of Salt Lake City and its metropolitan trading area are characteristics which are to be appreciated in a progressive busi-ness man. He has always taken an interest in community affairs and has shown a willingness to shoulder his share of the civic load. It is men like Albert Maxfield who, because of the successful conduct of their business and private affairs and their willing-ness to contribute to the public good, are wholly deserving of a few words of commendation. It is a pleasure to pay him this brief tribute. CLEVE MAX IE In mentioning some of those men who are taking a progres-sive part in the evolution of the business and civic life of Salt Lake City we would be censored if we failed "to include Mr. Cleve Maxie, owner and operator of Maxie s Auto Laundry. Mr. Maxie is that solid type of citizen whose fairness and friend-liness and sincere desire to be of service are accountable for a large measure of his success in the Auto Laundry business. As time goes on his personal inter-ests have become more closely interwoven with the business and civic affairs of the city. As a re-sult he has, quite naturally, be-come accepted as a man who can be called upon . and who will cheerfully do his part to further the . development of those com-munity activities to which he is best fitted to lend assistance. Cleve Maxie has, by the con-duct of his business and his at-tention to civic affairs, earned the friendship and good will of his fellow citizens. He is to be complimented for his activities and we only express the desire of 'his many friends and associ-ates in wishing him continued success. of business is recognized through-out this entire district and their furtherance of civic activities and support of those organizations, whose main objectives are di-rected along lines of civic better-ment is well known to their im-mediate associates, i Loftus and Rose are men who are equally liked and respected by their intimate friends, and business associates. They are loyal to the community, thank-ful for their success in business and have shown their apprecia-tion by their contributions to various civic movements of bene-fit to the city. We congratulate George Loftus and Gene Rose for being good citizens, progressive businessmen and boosters of their home town. T. J. MEMMOTT Generally speaking, civic pride is one of those things that goes hand in hand with success, be-cause a man must have been suc-cessful to fully appreciate the advantages that were afforded him by the' community in which he lives. Mr. T. J. Memmott of the paint-ing contracting firm bearing his name, is One of those progressive business men o Salt Lake City who has shown his appreciation for his success by his attention to civic matters. His willingness to become a cog in the wheel of community progress, whenever united effort is needed to put over some movement or project advanced for the good of his city has always been taken for grant-ed. Mr. Memmott's quiet assump- tion of responsibility, not only in, connection with his own contract-ing business but in regard ; to other matters as well, has very often lent a feeling of confidence to others interested in the same movements.' v In complimenting T. J. Mem-mott upon his leading position in the community we do no more than express the admiration and respect of his many friends and associates. ' r " " ;" Mr. Moroni Kriepl owner and operator of the Holland Dutch Bakery, is one of those progres-sive bakery operators and busi-ness men of Salt Lake City who consistently forged ahead in bus-iness. He has also put his should-er to the wheels or civic progress whenever help is needed in fur-thering enterprises promoted for the general welfare of the com-munity. Mr. Kriepl was never a man given to wishful thinking. His methods are those of direct ac-tion and whether the problem at hand is one concerning his own business or that of a civic nature, he attacks it with optimism and a vigorous enthusiasm. Add to this his acknowledged business ability and his keen sense of val-ues and it is easily understood why he is almost invariably suc-cessful in business or other mat-ters. ; We feel that it is our duty to call the attention of our readers to these worthwhile characteris-- , tics of Moroni Kriepl and to him a well deserved tribute for his straight forward business me-thods and for the unselfish in-terest he has shown in " public wlfare. O DALE JOHNSON It is appropriate that we in-clude in this review of progres-sive Salt Lake City business men, Mr. Dale Johnson, regional mgr. of the Maytag Northwest Co. He not only has the reputation, of being progressive but also the added one of being a willing sup-porter of many community af-fairs. . - ' - Aside from his business activi-ties Mr. Johnson has always shown an interest in the civic betterment and progress of his city and has backed up his in-terest : by his contributions to many pi'ojects which have bene-fitted the city and the surround-ing area. He is a good and loyal citizen and the full measure of his loyalty is most apparent be-cause of his willingness to aid community . activities. His help along these lines has made of Dale Johnson a fine ex-ample of the type of man we all appreciate. We congratulate and extend to him, on behalf of all citizens interested in better busi-ness and civic progress, sincere appreciation for his contributions to the general welfare of Salt Lake City and vicinity. - , : o . " C. R. MICHELS Logically a man who has earn-ed the reputation of being one of Salt Lake "City's more progres-sive roofing contractors would in doing so have earned the friend-ship and good will of a great many people throughout this en-tire district. A man who justly deserves that distinction is mo-dest, efficient, friendly Mr. C. R. Michels, owner of the C. R. Mich-el- s Roofing Co. Mr. Michels is the type of a man who would be an . asset to any community, not only because the successful conduct of his business plays a definite part in the general civic scheme; but be-cause the ultimate measure of his value to his city and this dis-trict lies in the fact that he is un-tiringly zealous and remarkably successful in the promotion of civic progress. It would be hard to estimate the actual dollars and cents value of men like this to their commu-nity. We congratulate Salt Lake City for numbering among its more progressive citizens such a man as C. R. Michels and we also express the wish that he will en-joy many more years of success and prosperity. ROBERT G. GRAY Due to the efforts of a group of wide awake business and profes-sional men. Salt Lake City has attained a dominant position in the commercial life of the inter-mountain states area. One of the men who has justly earned credit for being a progressive member of that group is Mr. Robert G. Deen me inspiration oi many who know him. His personality and energy in directing the operations of his restaurant are .important factors in his outstanding suc-cess. We are glad to pay this well-deserv- ed tribute to O. O. Kissel-burg for being one of Salt Lake City's more progressive business men and to wish for him contin-ued success and prosperity. CLINT MADSEN One of the more progressive realtors of Salt Lake City and one whose success can partly be attributed to a deep insight as to the direction in which the city will develop is Mr. Clint Madsen of the C. Madsen Realty Co. He has a sound basic knowledge of real estate values and has turned that knowledge to the advantage of the people with whom he does business. His aggressive methods coupled with his sound and prac-tical ideas, have made the ser-vices he renders to the people more valuable and materially contributed to his well earned success. Mr. Madsen is also civic mind-ed and has always shown a cheer-ful willingness to contribute his share of time and energy to the promotion of community projects. It is because of the activities of such progressive business peo-ple that Salt Lake City continues year after year, to show such a healthy growth . and expansion both as a residential and indus-trial city. We are glad to pay tribute to Clint Madsen for the part he is playing in the onward progress of his city. LEONARD ADAMS The progress of any commu-nity hinges to a great extent up-on the activities of the more pro-gressive men in the world of business. This is as true in this locality as in any sector and lo-cal leaders are thus to be con-gratulated for their part in the general advancement of this sec-tion of the state. One of the more progressive lumber dealers of Salt Lake City is Mr. Leonard Adams, owner and mgr. of the Gray-Canno- n Lumber Co., who is widely known and universally liked. Few men have such a thorough knowledge of every phase of the lumber game and to state that Leonard Adams knows the busi-ness from A to Z is in no way an overstatement. The honesty which has always characterized this every transaction has gained for him the respect and good will of the many men and firms with whom he does business. The successful career of Mr. Adams, Illustrate themeritis of integrity, ability grounded in ex-perience and coupled with the added asset of a pleasing and sin-cere personality. We wish him many more years of continued success. EVA MATSON The true value of a citizen is not gauged by his or her person-al success. But rather by the manner in which they share that success by their contributions to the community in which they live. A city grows and flourishes according to the number of pub-lic spirited citizens who compose its population. Eva Matson, owner of the Eva Matson Dressmaking Shop, is one of those women who has given much toward the development of Salt Lake City and its environs. She has turned her personal suc-cess in the business field to the advantage of the people as a whole and has accomplished much towards making her city a better place in which to live. Eva Matson's thorough knowl-edge of every phase of the dress-making business has raised her to a position of leadership in her field of activities and gained for her recognition as one of the city's more progressive business women. We compliment Eva Mat-so- n in this Salt Lake City re-view and wish to offer her this small evidence of public esteem. HAROLD A. Mr. Gardner has devoted a great deal of his time and energy to the growth and development of his city and this district and it is fitting at this time that we attempt to express in some small way our appreciation for his un-selfish contributions to the gen-eral welfare of the community. His many friends admire and respect in him those virtues that promote confidence and inspire good will. His upright business methods are but an outward re-flection of his inherent appreci-ation for fair practices. We con-gratulate L. D. She has not only in her business activities but also in her attention to civic duty assumed an active part in community af-fairs. Marian Kenward has always been ready and willing to con-tribute her time and energy to the promotion of any project which promises to benefit the community as a whole. She has often sacrificed her personal in- terests to be of assistance to the city. Her efforts are deserving of commendation and support We congratulate Miss Kenward on her past successes and predict that the future will bring her even greater success. o VEARL J. This invariable policy has made the Mapleway Skating Rink, outstanding in its field, a fact that is well known' to the sports minded public in the Salt Lake City area. But Mrs. Everill has accomp-lished much more than just mak-ing a success of her business and private affairs and we take this opportunity to pay tribute to her for devoting what time she could spare to the general welfare, not only of her city but of this entire district as well. It is such individuals as she who are both successful in busi-ness and appreciative of their civic obligations that are deserv-ing of recognition. We take plea-sure in publicly giving Mrs. Eve-rill the credit for her accomplish-ments which her friends and as-sociates have so long accorded her. KAY OMURO To those progressive business men and women who have also taken a part in civic affairs we owe a debt of gratitude that we find difficult to pay. However, we can do so in part by publicly acknowledging their many ser-vices and we take this opportu-nity to pay a brief tribute to Kay Omuro, owner and manager of the M. O. Cleaners. In doing so we express the sentiment and feelings of not only the commu-nity but also those people who have been actively associated with her in business or civic af-fairs. Miss Omuro's time is almost wholly occupied by her own af-fairs. Yet there has never been an occasion when she has been called upon by the people of Salt JESS BIGHAM Mr. Jess Bigham, the execu-tive head of the Master Electric Shop in Salt Lake City is recog-nized as maintaining the largest and most complete appliance parts stock west of Chicago.' Also for the effic-ient and friendly willingness he has displayed in aecepting his share of responsibility in aiding civic projects. ' Jess Bigham is not the kind of a man who makes himself con-spicuous by the manner in which he conducts himself, either' in business or other matters. Yet his quiet reserve and air of confid-ence mark him as a man of sound judgment,, whose opinions and advice are sought after and listen-ed to with respect. We compliment Mr. Bigham for the successful management of the Master Electric Shop, also for his constructive advice and help on those civic affairs in which he has found time to in-terest himself. He is a man who many are proud to call friend. . PHILIP A. PRESSGROVE Successful business and pro-fessional men, as a general rule, show their appreciation for their success by their often repeated demonstrations of civic pride. This is a fortunate fact, otherwise a city would be lacking in that progressive element which advo-cates and develops various pro-jects of a civic nature, which are indicative of a progressive com-munity.
