Show r Progress of Pedagogy I PREDICTIONS made some time ago that the annual PREDICTIONS I convention of the National Education as association nearing its conclusion in Salt Lake Would be the most important important im im- im- im gathering ever held by the association during the I many l ny years ars of its useful existence have already been mote more more than verified S Owing to the world war which is chargeable with the prevailing high cost of living and which resulted in a deficiency deficiency of more than teach teachers rs because of the in inadequacy inadequacy inadequacy in- in adequacy of salaries to meet ch changed conditions and aloof also alo I of the social unrest that has appeared throughout the tie I country it was expected that more subjects of real importance import importance ance would be discussed at the Salt Lake convention contention than at any previous gathering I d The fhe subjects thus far discussed have covered covered to a aI I great extent every angle of discussion and all have been peen tr treated in a manner displaying much serious thought in connection with new conditions It is generally conceded even by the teachers that while education as a whole in inthis this this country has progressed during the past few years it U has not made an advance sufficient to to meet to-meet meet the needs of the thene ne newt new conditions As a Utah schoolmistress declared in a speech before the normal school department of the National Education association From now no noon on education must be a doing education in the Ule past it has beep been a knowing education From now on there must be less emphasis upon subjects and more upon projects less striving for endless information mation and more for definite accomplishment The whole chill child hl m must st go to school Increase in preparation is needed in pr er to establish teaching as a profession It will not otherwise command respect The courses of instructions for doctors lawyers and ministers have increased very much mu The preparations for teachers must be more extensive extensive exten exten- sh sive to keep up with progress F This view is correct but in order t to acquire ire the services of those willing to devote years to preparation there must be an increase in iii salaries commensurate commensurate commensurate with such services The teachers of the future not only must be e instructors but advisors and too they must be imbued with patriotism i in or order er that they may keep alive the fire of patriotism under the melting pot patriotism that i is transforming immigrants into real American citizens I America has reached a I I point as to population where i quality rather than quantity counts the most and to the teachers of the country we must look 10 o bring about the desired change |
