Show THE IfEST AIGWCAW CAHDINAL. ; . Leslie's Weekly says: ' After the unpleasant smoke of the Storer controversy laa blown away there remains a little live coal of cariosity concerning the attitude of the Soman hierarchy with reference refer-ence to the appointment of another American cardinal. Bom persons wonder whether any prominent American pre: late was helpful in seenriag the aid of-the Vatican in the negotiations relating to the friars' lands in the Philippines. Many good Americans who are not Catholics wo hid be glad to have another American cardinal, especially if he were an American such as Archbishop Ireland. But nothing is more certain than that the hierarchy surrounding the Vatican does sot want an American cardinal to be too American. This would be contrary to the famous syllabus of errors issued is-sued by Pins IX. in 1864. The Americanism of Archbishop Ireland, and even of Cardinal Gibbons, is not relished by ultramontane Catholicism. By his present zeal against the separation of church and state in France, Archbishop Farley Far-ley is increasingly commending himself to the powers that be. They thought well of him before. Of course this does not prove that he will receive the red hat. It is interesting to. look at, or even to fan, the live coal of curiosity, bat we have no call to burn our fingers with it. It is clear that Leslie's "Weekly does not know ,very much about American hierarchs. "We have one that could give the Pope cards and spades and blindfolded could do stunts that would make the Pope green with jealousy. Were he in the Vatican he would have the City Council of Rome under his .thumb in a week. When a new Parliament was to 'be elected he would put five' lines in the j Juvenile Instructor and the result would be an '. astonishment to all Rome yes, all Italy, "from Au-fudus Au-fudus to Po." And when that Parliament assembled 'some Italian Fernstrom would be elected -Speaker, and it would be noticed in a few days that he was running the whole machine. Talk about ultramontanes, the Old World is not in it. It is only on the free soil of the United States that perfect grace and infallible wisdom is vouchsafed vouch-safed to our rulers. In the clear American air thejf know what they iwant ; with the clear American directness they get it. There are no misunderstandings, uno mistakes ' and we from our higher vision can look pityingly down upon the bungling beyond the sea. |
