Since the reorganisation of the Harri-.fnaA Harri-.fnaA systems the first of the year, new policies bave been evident In all depart ments. and particularly In the purchaaing Separtment. headquarters of which are In New Tork City, under the direction of W. H. V. Thorn. , TjOss of life and limb and thousands of dollars In freight wrecks will be obviated in a measure on the Oregon Short Line by the purchase of a large number of steel freight cars of all kinds. Many "gondolas' will be placed In service this season on this system, with , what Is known as steel underf ramlng. In collisions col-lisions these frames withstand terrific shocks with but slight damage, and there Is rarely that loss of life which comes with the crushing wooden frames. Several new steel mail cars will also be In service. These cars have been used for the last few years on a number of Eastern systems with marked success. The entire car Is 'of ateel. and both the Interior and the exterior present a band-some band-some appearance. Stel cars do not tele-sope tele-sope in wrecks, neither do they bum. The great Increase In the expense of building this style of roach is more than Obviated by the saving in repairs, and . particularly In the saving of human Uvea.
