The vote overturned the union nationals government of Quebec, Premier Maurice Dupleseia, who had called the election after chal lenging war expenditures spproved by the Ottswa administration. Duplessls, who carried his own constituency to retain a seat In the provincial legislature, will be succeeded suc-ceeded as premier by Adelsrd God-but, God-but, who headed the Quebec government gov-ernment for two months In 1936. Dominion Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie King, under whose liberal lib-eral government Canada went to war at the side of Great Britain, said at Ottawa that It was "lm- possible to exaggerate the significance" signifi-cance" of the voting yesterday. "It has shown, above all," the prime minister said, "that the people peo-ple of Quebec are at one with their fellow Canadians In the other provinces prov-inces In the determination that a united Canada shall cooperate at the side of Britain and France In the war to defend freedom and resist aggression." The liberal victory eased a tense situation In the Dominion cabinet from which the three liberal ministers min-isters from Quebec hsd ssid they would resign If their party were defeated. The vote gave the liberals 68 of the 86 seats In the legislature a gain of St over the number of places the party won In the last election In 1936. The union Rationale retained only 15 of its 76 seats. The voting In one constituency; Chsrlevols-Saguenay Chsrlevols-Saguenay was deferred until November No-vember 16. The third party, action liberate nationals, led by Paul Gouln, never waa In the running. Gouln himself him-self wss defeated In the Montreal Mercter constituency.
