Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablctt I cannot begin to put into words how I feel today. For the! shocking news of Harvey Gar- rity's death has left me with a washed out feeling. I have not; only lost a friend but Bingham: and Utah has lost one of its outstanding out-standing citizens. I Harvey's life reads like a Horatio Hor-atio Alger novel. Born in Salt Lake City on January 10, 1902. He was raised and went through public school in that city. Working Work-ing his way through engineering i school at the University. Harvey j had a number of jobs after grad- j uating, but always going ahead. He went to work for Utah Copper Cop-per in 1925, and for a brief per- iod as assistant general manager of the late B. & G. railroad, ha: been connected with that company com-pany which is now a division ol Kennecott Copper Corporation, ever since. He started as a member of a survey party in the engineering department and with sheer ability abil-ity and willingness to work, he raised to the position of general superintendent of operations. He is remembered in baseball circles as the first president of the Utah Industrial league. Harvey Har-vey was at the head of this league lea-gue for the first three years of its existence and through him was layed the foundation for the most successful seini-pro organization or-ganization in the country. When he went to Magna baseball was dead as a Do Do bird, but he revived re-vived it and by hard work and smart promotion Magna was soon a power to be reckoned with. As athletic manager of Gemmell club he was responsible for us having ball clubs that was respected re-spected throughout the west. Last year he worked in close cooperation co-operation with the BDAA in bringing Bingham back into the Industrial league and he saw to it that we had night ball, with the best lighted field in Utah. Being a top amateur boxer l himself, he was an ardent boxing box-ing fan, and whenever he had j the time, he attended these con-1 con-1 tests. He took up skiing the past ! few years and natural athlete I he was, became quite proficient j at this great winter sport. j My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family for they have lost a husband and a father, the likes of which doesn't come a-long a-long very often. I have lost a friend, one that when anyone mentions the name of Harvey Garrity, I can proudly say he was my friend. AL o |
