present the readers of the NEWS with your kind l indulgence lew facts concerning the opening of the California Mission In jour issue I ol December ijth 1896 I saw a letter I from Elder G F Harding wherein the deals i conveyed that the mission lies been opened only three ears In n previous letter from one of the Elders he states that there are lour branch organized in the state In the spring of 1891 I received a letter let-ter groin Box li cam me on a mission to open tin I and take charge ofl the Call fertile and Western States mission be owing to circumstances I did not star I on my mhsion between ij and 14th streets Oakland for toper month Sunday afternoons for one month i let strangers attended 1 ou meetings I also heard of and foun quite n number of peopl who claimed a standing in Edward Garlic second isistanti So you see that in a little over three months from the time ol ou amvall had baptized eight persons ordained or-dained one Elder and organized Iwo branches and one Sunday school Through the kindnes I I and goodui 0rJId ln of Elder Doctor J P 1 1 P 1 Van 8ood J in giving us the use of a hall free ot renton rent-on Sixth street San Francisco we were able to hold meetings In the metropolis so on January 15th ib93twc commenced holding meetings on Sunday evenings In San Francisco but cull continued holding them in the day time Sunday in Castle Hall Cast Oakland In April 1856 Elder VanDenBerg gave us the use ol I furnished rooms to live m Up till this lime April 1893 I had laborer alone when in this month Elder Kiel Johnson ol Ovid I Bear Lake county onlnokl in io d r came May the same year Elder Alva Keller and Henry I II Williams of Mill Creek Ward bait Lake County and George H Macock ol Fairview lltber County arrived June nth 1893 Elders Williams and MnCock left by steamer for Los Angeles to labor In the Southern part of the state and on the 14th Elders A S Keller I and N B Phillips went to Sacramento In the early spring Elder Mailressou branch president returned to Utah and on July and 1893 Elder Prank Green well was set apart as President of f the Oakland branch with M K Mortensen as assistant Owing to the serious all ness of the wie of Elder Niels Johnson I released him and he returned hem July lolh 1893 On August and 1893 Elder J U Cummings ot Mill Creel Ward Salt Like County arrived I appointed him to labor with rider AIn b Keller
