Show f : Strong Language Used in Letter From City Officers. Eureka's Statement. KITRKKA, Nov. In an open letter to Dr. Beatty and the public: In view of the mialeadlns and MwHoue statements state-ments which Lr. Bealty of the atate health board haa aimed at one of our ulnsiaa Ike a.ili iiaa, aa deem It our duty to place the facts rccardinjr our present epidemic of aickneea before the public. KJrat. we want to aay that lr. Beat-f Beat-f v' orders have been carried out to the . letter. In fart, we have really adopted adopt-ed more stringent measures thsn those which he recommended and here In Kureka every business establishment of a nonessential nature wss not only closed upon the first appearsnce of the disease In our community, but forced to remain closed. At not time were the actions of the Kureka city hoard of health impeded or Influenced hy newspaper articles by the editor of the Kureka Reporter or by any other Individual. On the contrary, con-trary, all the people of Kureka have cooperated with us In every wsy possible. pos-sible. Our shows and even the candy stores, pool h Us and soft drink places have been put out of business for the time being This action was taken when the first caae of influensa waa brought to the attention of tha proper officials. Further we want to say that long before the state board of health requested re-quested quarantine over afflicted homes the editor of the Kureka He-porter He-porter was openly advocating such procedure, but we hesitated to take action because we were anxious to handle the local situation tn accordance accord-ance with Or. Beatty s Instructions. When the atate board of health cams out. and thia was only recently, with an order that a quarantine be put Into ' force over homes in which there were cases of ths disease. Kureka officials lost no time In complying therewith. Or. Beatty's statement that the death rate is high In Kureka because proper precautions were not taken and his Instructions In-structions followed Is a malicious lie and should be refuted by every fair-minded fair-minded cltlxen of the city. Pneumonia at this elevation la most serious, especially when It affects men whose long work underground has lowered their vitality. The lack of the proper kind of help and nursing Is In a measure responsible for a fair percentage per-centage of our deaths. Like all mining min-ing camps our population la concentrated concen-trated into a very small area which j tends toward the spread of the Infec-1 Infec-1 Hon In splta of all precautions that can be taken. Manylarge f mil lea are living In small houses, some of which are difficult "to properly heat and ventilate ven-tilate and ton much emphasis cannot be placed upon the lack of assistance by the general public to those who are afflicted. .- Hlgned: Kureka City Board f Health; Major Church.
