We are juititied by the .Spirit btcniiite we have entered in at the door. The Spirit ol God who hm seen it? I have not. But 1 have felt it. What ii It like? la It in the lorm of a per not. age? The Spirit of God, according accord-ing to my underratundine, la not a per-una per-una go of U he rime le. Itut It ta a spirit the spirit ui life. If you could tee every living tlunfc by the spirit that U in mail, yuu would aee it lull of the Spirit ol (rod. It it In niRD, it ia In bcaa, it it in the vegetation; in (act, it it in all that God hat created. It la in all, and through all; and everything exUta by it. II it wore nut lor thia -.pint, death would Atep In. But it it lile. Now. when men and women Uke upon theniselvea the reaponftibihty ol bapium, they are then in a way to receive the Imposition ol hands lor the reception ot that m It conies upon them and abides with them, through the layimc on ot Imnds, and it opciate a on the spirit in them. Now, what ia it Riven us tot? this spirit, ny wnicn we are juhimch, ami which leads us Into all truili, is given to ua lor the grand purpose ul our exalia lion in the pretence ol our Father, The Latter-day Saint that has had latin, that has repented ol his sins, and been baptized, bap-tized, haa thia Holy Spirit conferred upon him lor the purpose of guidinK his leet, controlling his tongue, controlling his body, controlling the passions ol the body, controlling ti e spirit tlut is in the body, controlling the whole creaiurr; and he can no more ly this Spirit aside thtm he can Uy aside (he bapium that lie haa acted upon, or tlun he can ly aside faith and repentance; because the spirit is what justifies the creature. This spirit ia given to the Latter-day Saiuts that they n ay be justified. Now, if I have not cultivated that spirit, then 1 am going backward. In stead ol having this spirit and getting it solidly hx.d In me, 1 am letting It go until perchance 1 deny the bupimn that God haa permitted me to receive, and tiie repentance 1 have passed through, and the laith that has entered into my heart 1 am either advancing with that spirit in my heart, or I am reloading until I throw overboard everything 1 have done and deny the faith. This is the situation, as 1 understand it, though men do not believe it altogether. But my experience of nearly titty yeara teaches me that I am cither advancing toward mv Father and toward Ilia auL vatiun, or 1 am retracing the step that I have made. I am not standing mil. There ia no inch thing in this Church. We are either in the light or in the darkness. dark-ness. When ttie tun sets in the west, gradually darkness steals upon us Irom the east until we are enveloped with it. The sun haa not deserted ttie earth; but it ha gone from us. While it it setting to ut it is rising to somebody in another part ol the eaitlu But when our minds become dark, how great it that darknessl 1 have teen darkueaa steal over the minds ol persons, and yet tome ol them will say they never felt better In the Church in their lives. Dissect the lile of such an individual. I aay to him, " You never led better in your lile in tho Churchr"' "No.' "Do you pay your tithing, brother?" 'Oh? no, 1 have slopped that." "Do you pray In your familyr"' "No, 1 do not pray In my tamily." "Do you attend to your secret se-cret prayers?" "No" "And never felt better In your life?" "No, never lelt better." "Now, 1 know from mv experience that a man cannot feel well in the Gospel unless he attends to these things. I low do you lee! toward the ('residency of the Church? How do you leel tow.ird the Twelve? How do you leel toward the 1'residency of the Stake? How do you feel toward your Bishop? How do you feel toward your teachers? How are you toward your neighbor?" "Well, 1 don't consider anybody around here fit to associate with, and really I am not very comiortable in the pretence ol the President of the Stake." "What is the matter? Do you diller with him?'' "Yes, he don't preach the right kind of doctrine to suit me but 1 never Celt better bet-ter in the Church in my lile." Now, as strange aa this may seem, a man said that to me practically not more than three weeki ago. That man told me he was not doing the things I have mentioned, men-tioned, and yet he said he never fell better bet-ter in hia life. Is that encouraging the Spirit ol God in his heart that will jut til y him beiorehia Maker? I aay, no; be will never be justified by the Spirit ol God while he I. vet in that darkness that he hat seemed to allow bimsell to get into. 1 know the spirit by which lie said he never felt better in hit lite. 1 have teen it; and it is a snare and a delusion. de-lusion. Hut 1 try to love my ueighbor as myself, 1 have sought earnestly, in prayer and fasting, for the Spirit ol the Lord; but I feel sometimes like I am so poor in spirit and to weak in determination, determina-tion, and aa if when I would do good evil it present with me, that If the Lord did not help me I would fall forever. What it that kind of spirit In a man? it is the spirit that prompted the publicau when he said. "God be mercilul unto me a sinner;1' while the Pharisee, in the pride of his heart, thanked God that he was nut as other men. It it the humble, hum-ble, lowly spirit that wins In this Church. Men may hold their heads as high aa they please; men may be arrogant, lull ol vanity and ot lies; men may be wealthy and ride in fine carriages; but if the spirit of humility Is not there, then the Spirit ol God does not reign there. It will not do lor me, alter having received the ordinances of the Church, to aee how little of the Spirit of God 1 can get along with and still be held in fcliounhiii. II a man cultivates a bad spirit, it will, like the measles, come out on him sooner or later, and be will show his true colors. But we who have entered into covenant and have determined in our hearts to serve the Lord, are justified by the Spirit II It ib in our possesmuu, aud we keep it there, determined that no act ol ours shall grieve that tender plant which may be iust bpringiiig into lite within us, or it may have been there lor many years, until it becomes a fixed inhabitant ul the heart and never leaves the creature to wauder Irom tin Maker kuow that by experience. This Spirit must be in men and women like a wtdl ol water springing up unto everlailing lif It mutt shine through their eyes and be manifest in every act, because it must Heroine paramount to all other spirit), il they wuuld serve God with undivided heu rta. If theae things abound in us, then are we servants and handmaidens nl the Lord, and by the blood we are sanctified. sanctifi-ed. 1 cannot but think of that sacrifice that was made for me. Christ came on the earth to offer himself up as a sacrifice. sacri-fice. He knew the agony lie would have to endure; He knew the terrible death th.it was to be inflicted upon Him; yet He ottered himsell up. For whom? l or himself? No: for every man and woman, no matter what their color or their nationality. He died lor all men. When I reflect upon Hit innocent blond that was shed for me, and know that thus fnr in my life I have conformed to His will and aerved Him to the best of my ability, according to the light I have had, (the time was when 1 did not have much) I am not at this day going to lo-e that Spirit and allow it to get beyond my grasp, if God will help me to keep it within my breast. I cannot do without with-out It. I was writing a letter the other day, In whic h 1 stated that 1 was a'aving with I'reiudent Woodrulf; not that I be lieved my presence was necessary lor his welf.ire, but 1 could not do witnotit him. I cannot live without the i'rieM-hood, i'rieM-hood, because I cannot have the spirit in tne that will guide me in the things that pertain lo the knowledge that my leader receives. It never comes lo me; it comes to my leader. The comfort that ii necessary for the creature and for my family, that spirit is in me constant ly, if I live for il; hut that which ia beyond be-yond mv jurisdiction and rule mtiAt come to my leader and begbei tome by the mouthpiece of God. Ihoteorc the facts in the cae. We talk about having the spirit within us to guide us, and it is an absolute netesMty that we do have it; but 1 tell you ihetc will nothing noth-ing come to the bodv ol this Church only aa it passes down from the Almighty through His orgnnixcd I'rieMhood. I cannot t rcak otl by mysrll ami become a law unto myself; but i can have all the revelation that is nee d-d to guide me and my family individually. We are told that Christ will come and appear in the eyes of all. Do vou not suppose that His I'riesthtHitl ' will inform the Latter-duy Saints when He shall appear aud at least give us lime tidrrts. I think we will have plenty cf time to mit our shots on. The Latter-day Sam s that are living according to the light and intelligence of the Spirit ol God, will have time to put on the wedding garment, gar-ment, and they will not go out naked into His presence nor will He lake them unawares. True, the day nor the hour no man knoweth; but the Latter-day Latter-day Saints, liirough the channel ol the Priesthood, shall know all that is ncrcj. sary tor their salvation. God gave him-sell him-sell lor us, u bring us into the position where this obedience and this tustihca-lion tustihca-lion might be wholly tfhcacious in our behalf. It could not be w ithuut it. One is not perlect without the other, any nintu tlin Una hodv ia nrrf. rt i,.mm ail lit members. All these ti ingsare given expreasly for a perfect unity in the heart ol the creature; and beside that, nun Is given his agency, that he may receive tnem from the Itbetal hand ot God or reject them. It is within my province to reject all these things, if I deiire to do to. But I have not the re suit ot that agency; that is U-yond my control. My heart it given ie, and it beats without any volition on my part. God has removed that from met But it is there fur a wise purpose, ft Is there to receive the Spirit of God. I am here to acknowledge the goodness ol God and His s am lice, with all the power that 1 have. 1 am here with my agency lo benefit by the innocent blood luat was shed for the transmission of Adam, which placed me again in the presence of my Father. The blood has sanctified this people, and I know it. I kuow that the prophets and apostles and sa nt that have passed behind the veil look upon this people, and they sav, "Wnat more could God do lor you than He hat done?" There is no love that surpasseth that love which causes a man to lay down his life lor his Inend, ami God has done that. Our Klder Brother has given bis life, and His blood satictiheth us to our eternal salvation In the kingdom of God, This it what hat been done for this people. What ahali we do with the bleiisiiigs that we have already received? Will we from this time forth keep the commandment? Will we be justified by the Spirit? Will we be sanctihed by the blood? Will we say in our hearta, "With the help ol God, 1 will honor that which my Father has given me; 1 will honor my brother! and sisters; 1 will seek to love my neighbor utrmatlf; I will seek to do good unio all men, and I will not allow the passions which men exhibit in the world to take possession of me and cause me to grieve the spirit, that 1 may stand justified before God when He comes to make up Hit jewels?" God bltss you. Amen. |
