Show FRANK K. BAKER U-IkLa -' ntEOBAM-SPOHmPITOR-- Besides giving Coach Brick Breeden a first class headache, head-ache, the B. Y. U. Cougars gave the University of Utah basketeers something to think about when they beat the Montana State Bobcats twice at Provo last weekend. Breeden will try to ease his headache at Logan this weekend by juggling his lineup for the series against the champion defending defend-ing Utah Aggies. The Utes realize as they prepare to take on the Cougars here at the Deseret gym that, no matter how inexperienced inex-perienced the Cougars are, they have a world of plain, unadulterated unadul-terated fight plus an improving attack. The Cougars put on a rousing finish to take the second game In an overtime period, riding in on a wave of inspirational enthu-. enthu-. siasm that made them look more like the old-time B. Y. U. teams than ever before this year. Once Earl Giles tied the score with a free throw and forced the game into the extra period, there was no denying the Cougars. They drove pellmell for the basket, rustled the ball furiously and utterly routed the Cats, who once had a 10-point lead on them. o o o la anticipating this week's series here between these courageous Cougars and the Utes, I am inclined to believe that perhaps the Salt Lake City fans will be repaid for having to wait so long ts see the local college opener. B. Y. V. cornea la town, as the hi, ateppins; loaaW of the division, the team which at present is making us so-called so-called experts look bad for picking It to finish no better . than third. Utah, on the other hand, has a team supposed to be in the running, but still more or less untried. This series will tell a lot about the forthcoming race, and It ought to bo closely fought. see Breeden thinks it will be a sweet series. And he ought to know, for his charges have played both teams. After Saturday's game at Provo he told me that he felt Utah has Ma little better balanced scoring combination," but figures that the Cougars "have a little more speed on the guard line than the Utes." o e e In trying to forecast the game, the prognosticator Is confronted con-fronted with soma confusing facts. If the original ranking which placed the Utes above the Cougars is to hold true, the Utes ought to be favorites, especially Inasmuch as they will be at home. On the other hand, the Cougars are the division leaders and such prestige ought to be worth something. Moreover, they took two games from the Bobcats and Utah only broke even with the Cats. But again, there is a catch to the evidence. At least there is some suspicion that this last item should be discounted somewhat. some-what. Utah got its even break at Bozeman on Montana State's horn floor, where the Cats are admittedly tougher than they art away from home. And the Y" meanwhile has gotten away to its fine start with three victories in four games on their own small floor. Six of their remaining eight games are away from home, where the other fellow has whatever actual and psycho- 1 logical advantage there is in being in your own house. o e o Bill Ogle, the veteran guard, may bo switched to center la place of lanky Ell Doyra this weak as Broaden Juggles his . Montana State linoup. This change may keep Doyra on the ' stanch a part of the time and send young Cosner into the game as guard. The Cats psed this combination for the last six or servon minutes of the first half against B. T. U. Saturday night and pulled away to a comfortable margin during that period. , Doyra roturnod to the linoup to start the second half, and . the Cats never matched the Cougars after that. O O 0 Several close students of the game were surprised that Doyra ' was returned to the game when the other combinaiton with Ogle , at center and Cosner on the guard line was clicking so success- i fully. Breeden explained that he felt he needed Doyra's height for rebounds, but added that he thought Ogle might be at center next week. j Ogle jumped well at center and his' mates rustled the ball , In fine fashion. In fact, the Cats got the ball from center jump i very time on this combination and their passing was much 1 smoother and faster than it was with the lanky Doyra back in j the gam. |
