Show Slt Lake Need More Viion , - MtMORY PARK has been frowinr; rapidly In beauty. A few years ago It was but an Ideaa vbion In the minds of a fev per sons of what a (em It might be made at the very brink of uptown Salt I ake. Now it Is splendidly fulfillinc Its mission of honor to our veterans of the World war. -The latest contribution to the beauty of the park Is an artistic gateway recently started. If you saw the picture of it In The Telegram a few nights ago, you will realize how much It will add to the attractiveness of this unusual un-usual canyon beauly spot.. The landscaping of the capvon sides leading up to the slate capitol and the trees on both sides of the canyon promise to add Increasing beauly to the rark with each passing year. But the point worth stressing Is the fact that Memory park la going to take Its place In (he beautlfication of one of the world's prettiest cities simply because of an idea trans lated into definite action. Back of Memory f ark are the thoughts, hard work and unsel ish service of a few persons. The entrance to Oty Creek canyon would still be a barren, sun-parched gully had not these public spirited citizens been fired with the thought of what It could become. As it is, we and our children chil-dren will enjoy Its verdant treasures. If only Salt Lake had more citizens who would be stirred to such community service! A hundred and one possibilities are all about uschances to add Immeasurably to the pleasure of living In Salt Lake. Who will catch the vision of these potentialities f The possibilities have been visioned of transforming the barren sagebrush lands east of the city into a large forest. Persons are at work promoting this mosf worthy project, trying to obtain federal funds with which to care for a 3ooacre forest on the waste lands of he military reservation. Others have glimpsed the opportunity to transform Wasatch boulevard, during coming yean, into a scenic roadway of real splendor. Some public spirited citizens are at work on ideas by which Salt Lake may make much greater use of the seven canyons at its very door. Another movement proposes to make of the Great Salt lake a summer pleasure place of decidedly greater importance than at present. These and scores of other Ideas are beine. talked by alert citizens. A civic auditorium, is wanted. But we've waited in vain -for some citizen or estate to make a concrete contribution of land or money for an auditorium. audi-torium. . Most cities of this size hare many memorial memo-rial structures or parks bequeathed to the enjoyment en-joyment of future fenerations. It Is a matter mat-ter of surprise to persons from other cities that Salt Lake has not been the benefklar of more private memorials. "Where Is youf ' civic patriotism?" asked a prominent visitor here recently. "Do not the men who trow rich in this city feel their privilege and duty to leave something for the future of their community t" The answer Is that the battles of the frontier are not yet far enough behind us for our wealthy citizens to have caught this, sense of service to the community that b prevalent in the east Civic bequests are mighty scarce at present here, rut coming ; years should witness more memorials left by Individual citizens for the benefit of posterity. , The city Is destitute of civic leadership. Thus when a project such as Memory park is pushed to success, it Is only natural that we should acknowledge credit where due. But future years should see the spirit of com ' munity helpfulness become an ever increas ingly potent force for the advancement and improvement of Salt Lake. t . |
