Show GIY AUDITOR REFUSES I ID CERTIFY TO PAYROLL SIGNED BY CHIEF SHEETS .' . i. """"""" Th first move of the opponents of Chief of Police Sheets to test the legality of his mfirmation by seven members of the City Council came today when Chief Sheets lent his department payroll for March to City Auditor Reiser. - Th Auditor returned the payroll uncertified, to be signed by Police Captain John i Burbldge, as ranking officer of the department, on the ground that th appolitment of Sheets had not been legally confirmed by the City Council. Chef' Sheets In discussing the matter this afternoon said: "0 course, I will not have Capt. Bu'rbidge sign the payroll. ' That would be an aohisslon that I had no right to exercise authority as Chief of Police.. I shall mply hold the payroll until I have had time to consult with my attorneys and determined upon a course of action." ; I Us probable that the next step will be the institution by Sheets of mandamus procetilngs against Auditor Reiser to compel him to certify to the payroll which the Cef has signed. - - |
