March l.-The crumbling of prices In the cloeing dealings of Saturday' Sat-urday' stock market and the announcement announce-ment of the failure of a mercantile house after the close caused some anxiety regarding re-garding the opening market this morning. The London quotations were eagerly scanned to find an Indication of the probable prob-able course of the market. The moderate fall In prices of Americana served to reassure re-assure sentiment here somewhat. The Interval elapsed since Saturday was to the advantage of the market by affording time to learn exact details and thus avoid the danger of exaggerated rumors.- The' first quotation on the tape was. that of Manhattan,, which wa lifted 1 In the course of several transactions, but subsequent subse-quent quotations of various stocks showed some wide declines and heavy offerings. Two blocks of SOU) shares of Union Pacific sold at an advance of . Southern Paclnc was up and St. Paul . The market was extremely feverish after the opening. Some stocks recovered recov-ered and there were reactions, at other points. The market quotations showed a feverish fever-ish ebb and flow, bat steadied and became quiet before the end of the hour. The decline de-cline was obstinately contested. In a number num-ber of stocks. At first the weak stock were Inclined to rally and the strong stocks to react, but the pressure was sensibly sen-sibly relaxed after the accumulation of selling orders over Sunday was worked off. Some severe declines were made by special stocks. Colorado Fuel dropped 6. Northwestern 8, Nashville. Chattanooga Chatta-nooga ft St. Louis. 3. New Jersey Central and St. Louis'- ft San Francisco t, and Kansas ft Texas preferred 3. There were rallies of 1 to 1 In some of these. There were many losses of 1 to 1 points on the decline. Seven per cent call rate disinclined the operators to follow the advance, and the market showed hesttency. Before noon Southern Pacific was lifted 1 to 1. Amalgamated Amal-gamated Copper a point over Saturday and the market hardened' In sympathy. There were some wide declines In th Inactive In-active list. ' Slight reaction occurred here ' and there, but the main tendency waa distinctly distinct-ly upward, led by Southern Palflc, with an urgent demand from the shorts. Price quite generally got back to a parity with Saturday's -close, and in some instances notably above. Southern Pacific touched 62. a rise of 3. and Union Pacific advanced ad-vanced 2. while Atchison. St. Paul, the Rock Islands. Illinois Central.
