Show HISTORIC CATALPA REPORTED DYING Tree Taken From Virginia Three Centuriea Ago by Sir Walter Raleigh. LONDON, March 1 The old catalpa tree, which Is a feature of Gray's Inn Gardens, right in the heart of London, and which was taken from Virginia by Sir Walter Raleigh, and was to have been planted in Its special position by Queen Elisabeth. Is reported to be dying. f Queen Elisabeth was prevented .by nines ni-nes a from planting the tree herself, and she deputed Sir Francis Bacon, afterwards after-wards Lord Veduiam, to take her plaoe. As Raleigh named Virginia after his sovereign, sov-ereign, in 1585 the tree then transplanted Is well over three centuries old. |
