Daris County Official, a .;' Neighbor of s Four Reputed Re-puted Spouses of John We Taylor Now Residing: Resid-ing: at Farmlngton. WASHINGTON. April I . Abbott. Ab-bott. Sheriff of Davis county, Utah, was before the Senate Committee on Privileges Privi-leges and Elections today In the Smoot investigation. He was examined in regard re-gard to Apostle John W. Taylor, who. he said, is reputed to have five wives. Two of these wives are neighbors of Mr. Abbott in Farmlngton, Utah. These wltes are , known as Nettie Wolley, who has five children ranging from 11 to t years, and Nellie Todd, who has six children, ranging from 1 to 1 years, all of whom are recognised as Apostle Taylor's children. Two Work as Domestics. Two wives of Apostle Taylor, said Mr. Abbott, are Rhoda and Roxey Wellin. who are about 23 or 24 years of age. It was reported two years ago that they had been married to Taylor. One was working for Nettie Wolley, and the othsr for Nellie Todd, both as domestics. Senator Overman wanted to know if their ages had been given correctly at about 24 years. The witness said he believed be-lieved that to be abput their ages. "Then they must have been married since the manifesto?" said the Senator. "I don't know. I have told you all I know about them," responded the witness. wit-ness. Letter From President Smith. - Attorney Tayler placed in the record a letter writter to Senator Burrows by President-Joseph F. Smith, respecting his inability to have Mormons come to Washington to testify before the committee. He says that John Henry .. Smith. M. W. Merrill and George Teas-dale Teas-dale are ill and that John W. Taylor and M. F. Cowley were unwilling voluntarily vol-untarily to testify. - President Smith concludes Tola letter as follows: "As this is ft political matter and not a religious duty devolving upon them or me. I am powerless to exert more than moral suasion In the premises." Coming; to Utah. Mr. Tayler said he had nothing more to offer at the present time. Chairman Burrows stated that other witnesses were on their way here, and that he would adjourn the hearing suMect to call and would notify all persona concerned. con-cerned. It is understood another session ses-sion and the final one before the committee com-mittee goes to Utah will be held tomorrow. |
