Show MORAL SUASION WILL . RULE SCHOOL CHILDREN Teachers Are Prohibited the Use of the Rod in New York Public Schools. NEW YORK. Oct. 26. Neither principals prin-cipals nor teachers In the New York public schools are to have the privilege of enforcing obedience by the use of tod, ferrule or other means of corporal punshiment. A. proposed amendment to the present law- has been exhaustively exhaus-tively discussed by the committee of elementary education and when put to a vote was defeated. Moral suasion, it was decided, is the only up-to-date method worthy of consideration. Superintendent Su-perintendent Maxwell took a firm stand on that ground and a majority of the committee stood with him. Three committeemen com-mitteemen favored giving a restricted right to administer some form of corporal cor-poral punishment. After a lonr discussion It was decided that the committee should report to the Board of Education today in favor of retaining the ' present rule forbidding the use of corporal punishment in the public schools. Members of the committee believe that their report will be accepted by the board, and that there will be no further agitation of the subject. |
