PHILADELPHIA, Oct 1L In a whirlwind whirl-wind fight that was scheduled to go six rounds at Industrial haa last night Terry McGovern had Eddie Hanlon so badly beaten that the police stopped the contest con-test In the fourth round. At the time the city authorities interfered the former champion was raining blows on the prostrate pros-trate form of Hanlon, who -was hanging on the ropes. The contest was a terrific one. i-P y the fourth round McGovern had a shade the better of It In the fourth Hanlon, seeing an opening, sent a left hook, hard to the chin and the former champion went . down for the count and to many of the spectators it looked as though McGovern was out of it. Hanlon. however, threw discretion to the wind and tried to put in a,finl8hlng blow. He fought so recklessly t)r it proved his downfall. McGovern S at him so viclouely that almoat be-iy be-iy the spectators realized It he had the Callfornlan helpless. . In th first round each man slugged with both hands, during which McGovern hooked his left to the neck and sent In two uppercuts, making Hanlon break ground. McGovern upperciit Hanlon with a right, and then hooked a hard left; to the Callfornlan's chin. McGovern followed fol-lowed this up with a right and left swing - to the head and Hanlon retaliated by putting four straight lefts to McGovern's face and a right swing to the head as the bell rang. . McGovern started off with a rush In the second. He sent a left to the face, a left and right uppercut to the jaw and : a right and left swing to the body, but as he delivered the last blow he caught a .swinging right hook on the chin. Han-. Han-. Ion followed this up with two. lefts to the face and a hard right swing to the chin.. McGovern got In two hard right .uppercuts to the chin and received a left hook on the Jaw in return. Both men took thtngy easier at the opening of the third round.' McGovera landed three hard swings on the law, but Hanlon fought hits buck and made Terry 1 clinch. Another rapid exchange of brows was followed by Hanlon giving McGovern a severe left uppercut to the chin,, which staggered McGovern. McGovern Instantly Instant-ly recovered and sent left and right to the face and repeated the punches. They ' exchanged right swings to the Jaw as the bell rang. McGovern came to the center of the ring in the fourth round appearing a little weak. Terry swung his left and rlfcfct to the Jaw and then Hanlon floored McGovern Mc-Govern with a left swing to the chin. McGovern took the count of nine. He clinched when he got on his feet and was nearly out He made a quick recovery, however, and rained blows on Hanlon and soon had him on the ropes. . The Callfornlan went down from the effect ' of right and left swings to the Jaw, and as soon as he got up Terry put him on the ropes, where he hammered him Into almost a helpless condition. Hanlon's hands were down and he was helpless. A terrific right arm swing put him In k prostrate condition on the ropes and all but out At this point the police Interfered Inter-fered and stopped the contest |
