The opening trades In stocks was . quite' large, and blocks of a thousand shares and upward changed hands In 'the Pacifies, St. Paul, Pennsylvania and United States Steel preferred. pre-ferred. There was a general decline which, however, did not exceed ft In any one Instance. In-stance. Baltimore A Ohio, Reading- and Southern Pacific were the roost affected. St. Paul was taken hold of at the lower range and advanced to -causing a rally throughout. The Pacifies and most of the other favorites recovered, to above yesterday's close. Renewed buying of Union Paclfio which carried It to 34, had a stimulating effect on the market, particularly- western stocks. Traders took profits In Union Pa-clflo Pa-clflo and It relapsed nearly a point. Other stocks eased off and the . trading cams largely to a standstill. Southern Pacific and Union Pacific were accumulated again advancing them to the highest. - The general market did not share in the rally to any noteworthy extent ex-tent and weakness In the leaders threw the market Into dullness. , .
